Venezuela to remove breast implants for free (AP)

CARACAS, Venezuela ? Venezuela is offering free surgeries for women to remove faulty French-made breast implants, the country's top health official said.

Health Minister Eugenia Sader said women with implants made by the now-defunct French company Poly Implant Prothese may go to hospitals that carry out plastic surgery to have the implants removed, the state-run Venezuelan News Agency reported.

Sader said Tuesday that the free procedure will simply be to remove the implants and will not include replacing them.

"Those patients are running a risk," Sader said. However, she said, women need not seek emergency care and instead may visit hospitals at their convenience.

France's health system has recommended that women with the PIP implants get them replaced, and has agreed to pay for surgeries. In Brazil and Argentina, however, health officials just recommend checkups.

The president of Brazil's Plastic Surgeons Association, Jose Horacio Aboudib, said "I'd remove them from any patient that wants to, but I don't see the need for everyone to go into surgery."

"In France, the government pays for the surgery. Here it is not considered a public health risk, and so the patient would have to pay for it," Aboudib said, noting that his association will create a breast implant registry in January, so that doctors can register information on surgeries and the implant material used in a database aimed at improving patient safety and care.

On Tuesday, a group of 50 women in Argentina threatened to sue their plastic surgeons if they don't get free replacements of the faulty French breast implants.

The group is led by attorney Virginia Luna, who herself has the "PIP" silicone gel packs implanted in her breasts. She said five of her clients have obtained out-of-court agreements to provide free replacements, and if the rest don't get them as well, her group will sue.

Argentine clinics say they'll replace leaky implants, but the symptoms aren't always detectable, and Luna says any woman with the faulty implants can suffer psychological damage.

It's unclear how many women have the PIP implants in Venezuela, where breast enlargement surgery is popular and doctors say the French implants used to be widely used.

An estimated 35,000 to 40,000 women in the country have breast enlargement surgery each year, said Dr. Marisol Graterol, president of the Venezuelan Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has criticized the widespread popularity of breast surgery, saying women shouldn't be sold on an image that big bosoms are attractive.

The plastic surgery society recommended last week that women with PIP breast implants see a doctor to have them checked. Graterol said doctors should decide depending on each patient's situation whether or not the implants need to be removed.

Sales of PIP implants were halted in Venezuela in April 2010, Graterol said.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Henry Saud said he removed ruptured PIP implants from more than 10 patients during the past year.

In some cases, his patients hadn't noticed anything wrong and the leaking implants were detected during imaging exams, Saud said. In other cases, "they felt discomfort and had swelling."

"It used to be one of the most-used brands," Saud said.

Firefox 9.0 tops Android Apps of the Week (Appolicious)

The New York Times called 2011 a prime year for Android as its undeniable dominance finally made major app developers take notice. The result is a number of top brand apps heading to the Android Market, and that growing interest is reflective in this week?s app roundup. Mozilla has long since been interested in the Android platform, and 2011 offered a series of updates for Firefox on Android devices. Papa John?s Pizza and Krispe Kreme also launched Android apps this week, inching one step closer to hungry consumers.

Mozilla released version 9.0 for Android, optimizing the mobile web browser for larger screen sizes on Android tablets. Landscape mode is much easier to use, with your tabs now appearing as thumbnails on the left for easy access and navigation. Another perk is full website viewing on the right side of the tablet screen. Firefox also has a new Action Bar menu, which provides access to your preferences, downloads, add-ons, and so on. With validation for HTML5 forms and boosted start-up speed, there?s plenty to like about his update. It?s timely, too, as Google?s just signed an ad deal with Firefox, shelling out $300 million a year.

Catching up with mobile savvy competitors, Papa John?s Pizza has launched an app in the Android Market. It presents the entire restaurant menu, no sign-up required. Place an order for pick-up or delivery, speed things up with Quick Picks, or save your favorite meal preferences. There?s also a restaurant locator with directions, and promo codes for current promotions. It?s better late than never for Papa John?s, as Pizza Hut and Domino's have had Android apps for some time.

I can?t think of too many things more inviting than the bright glow of Krispe Kreme?s ?hot now? light. The mere suggestion of fresh, warm donuts will reroute more than your attention. Now the seductress has found its way into your pocket, with the Hot Light app. You?ll be alerted every time a ?hot now? light sparks up. You can set up alerts for a specific location, or choose to be pinged whenever you drive near a Krispe Kreme with the light on. Get directions that will send you directly to the hot lights, and tell your friends via Facebook and Twitter integration.

Overnight snowfall can make or break your day, but the Winter Wake-up alarm clock will get you up early enough to clear your driveway and defrost your car (or radio-in school closings so you can plan a worthy snow day). With a weather monitor set for your location, this Android app will send you a message if it has snowed. Set the number of minutes earlier you want to be woken up, with alerts coming in for frost, icy conditions or snow the night before. There?s also options to set your alarm for a single day or automatic repeat, depending on your needs.

Miss the days of disposable cameras, the sound of a camera click and the feel of a turn wheel? Well, your Android may not be able to bring back the turn wheel, but everything else you love about disposable cameras is replicated with Dotti?s new app. From the makers of Postagram, Dotti Disposable Camera?s best throwback is the stack of photos you get in the mail, printed on 4x6-inch FujiFilm photo paper. Complete with retro sound effects like the flash re-charging or the winding of the film, Dotti delivers the best of both worlds.

A common tip for first-time Android users is to download a tool to help manage your battery life and phone behavior. It deals with the phone?s network connectivity, screen time out and brightness. The sleep schedule alone may help save battery life by taking a break while you slumber through the night. There?s three modes this app operates in, with general, super and advanced settings. Super power saving mode, for instance, puts your phone on standby for as long as possible, while advanced customized mode lets you set the values for your phone?s energy-saving habits. There?s also an option to pause the service.

'Racist newsletter' timeline: What Ron Paul has said

Ron Paul has had to explain?racially charged statements and other controversial comments in newsletters published in his name in the 1980s and 1990s. Here's what he's said over the years.

It's the biggest setback to hit Ron Paul's candidacy for president: publicity about racially charged statements and other controversial comments in newsletters published in Mr. Paul's name in the 1980s and 1990s.

On Thursday he responded at some length to the concerns during an Iowa radio interview, calling the newsletter statements "terrible" but insisting that he wasn't the one who wrote them. He added that the offensive comments totaled about "about eight or 10 sentences."

Some journalists who have researched the newsletters say it was a lot more than 10 sentences, and that the Texas congressman's response on the issue has changed over the years.

Here, in timeline format, are some prominent Paul statements tied to the issue drawn from transcripts, video clips, and news reports.

1985 to 1994

?The controversial statements that have surfaced stem largely from this period. They were contained in newsletters with titles like Ron Paul?s Freedom Report, the Ron Paul Political Report, the Ron Paul Survival Report, and the Ron Paul Investment Letter, rarely under a byline (although many contained first-person references that readers would assume referred to Paul himself).

Some samples: A December 1989 newsletter quoted by James Kirchick in the New Republic predicted "Racial Violence Will Fill Our Cities" because "mostly black welfare recipients will feel justified in?stealing from mostly white 'haves.' "

Another letter said "I think we can assume that 95 percent of the black men in that city [Washington] are semi-criminal or entirely criminal."

An August 1992 edition of the Ron Paul Report labeled former Rep. Barbara Jordan (D) of Texas "the archetypal half-educated victimologist," according to the Houston Chronicle.

1995 to 1996

In a 1995 C-Span interview, Paul talks up his newsletter and espouses some familiarity with its contents. He says it deals a lot "with the value of the dollar, the pros and cons of the gold standard, and of course the disadvantages of all the high taxes and spending our government seems to continue to do."

Paul, having been out of office for a decade, ran for Congress in 1996 and the content of the newsletters were raised by his opponent as a campaign issue. Paul's campaign doesn't deny authorship of the newsletters, but says the Democratic rival is taking the message out of context.

In a Dallas Morning News interview, Paul said the comment about black men in the District of Columbia arose from his study of a report by the National Center on Incarceration and Alternatives, a criminal justice think tank in Virginia.

2001

In a story published by Texas Monthly, Paul tells the magazine that he didn't write "those words." The magazine itself says the newsletter statements are not "remotely like" Paul's public utterances.

"I could never say this in the campaign, but those words weren't really written by me," Paul said, according to Texas Monthly. "It wasn't my language at all. Other people help me with my newsletter as?I travel around. I think the one on Barbara Jordan was the saddest thing, because Barbara and I served together and actually she was a delightful lady."

Dan Aykroyd joins 'Dog Fight' with Will Ferrell (omg!)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Dan Aykroyd has joined Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis in the political comedy "Dog Fight," TheWrap has confirmed.

"Dog Fight," due August 10, stars Ferrell and Galifianakis as bumbling, rival politicians battling for a congressional seat in North Carolina. All three are producing the movie, along with frequent Ferrell collaborator Adam McKay.

It is not yet clear what role Aykroyd will play in the Jay Roach-directed film, however.

Ferrell and Galifianakis have some history with politics. Ferrell famously spoofed President George W. Bush on "Saturday Night Live" and in his HBO special, "You're Welcome, America -- A Final Night with George W. Bush." Galifianakis' real-life uncle Nick Galifianakis served in Congress from 1967 to 1973.

For his part, Aykroyd played President Jimmy Carter in a presidential reunion sketch featured on FunnyorDie.com, which was co-founded by Ferrell and McKay.

"Dog Fight," distributed by Warner Bros., also stars John Lithgow, Jason Sudeikis, Dylan McDermott, Thomas Middleditch and Brian Cox.

The film was written by "Eastbound & Down" scribe Shawn Harwell and one of the HBO show's executive producers, Chris Henchy.

Deutsche Boerse, NYSE extend merger deadline to sway Europe (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Deutsche Boerse and NYSE Euronext have extended the deadline for completion of their planned merger to March 31 next year as they seek to convince European regulators to back the $9 billion deal.

The exchanges, which agreed the merger on February 14, told the Securities and Exchange Commission last week they were exercising their right to extend the initial termination deadline of December31 2011.

The extension came after months of frantic lobbying by the merger partners as they try to convince European anti-trust authorities in Brussels to approve the combination -- the last hurdle to the deal.

European authorities are fearful the merged entity would have a monopoly in European futures and options and have sought remedies from the exchanges, which between them have over 90 percent of European trading, to address this concern.

The exchanges offered concessions in November, including spinning-off parts of NYSE's futures trading business and offering open-access to D.Boerse's clearing unit to rival exchanges.

But these were rejected by European officials, prompting further concessions two weeks ago and an assurance last week that derivatives trading fees would be capped for three years after the deal.

But European regulators last week showed no signs of buying these arguments, fuelling speculation the exchanges would look to bypass the anti-trust team and focus their lobbying on competition commissioner Joaquin Almunia.

The exchanges are likely to make a case for why their deal to create a pan-European exchange operator -- and the world's largest -- would be good for the European Union at a time when the continent is in financial crisis.

Both sets of exchange shareholders and the U.S. anti-trust authority have approved the deal so the European Commission is the last major hurdle for what would be the largest exchange merger in history.

The Commission is scheduled to decide whether to approve the merger by February 9 but Almunia said last week a decision on the deal was possible by the end of January.

NFL coach: Blame me for loss

Updated?Dec 26, 2011 2:56 PM ET

?

BEREA, Ohio (AP)

Browns coach Pat Shurmur says he's the one ultimately responsible for his team's mistakes.

Two blunders on Saturday in Baltimore were costly in a 20-14 loss to the Ravens. Browns backup quarterback Seneca Wallace botched a scoring opportunity at the end of the first half and rookie defensive tackle Phil Taylor jumped offside on fourth down in the final two minutes to seal Baltimore's win. Shurmur said there are no excuses and the Browns ''have to play smarter.''

Shurmur also had no update on quarterback Colt McCoy, who hasn't been cleared to practice since suffering a concussion Dec. 8 against Pittsburgh. Shurmur said McCoy took part in team meetings Monday and the team won't know until Wednesday if he'll be able to practice.

On any other Christmas, Donnita Howard would be at home in Pensacola, Fla., where she is the youngest of eight siblings, eating, laughing and enjoying the holiday.

This year, Howard, 20, is a recruit at the Great Lakes Naval Base and spending her first holiday away from home.

However, thanks to a North Chicago church, she got to celebrate the day.

Howard was among 90 recruits who got to leave the base for just this day, the only day they leave during their 10 weeks of boot camp, to enjoy holiday services, food and activities at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in North Chicago.

Howard said she teared up during the morning church service, thinking of her family, her faith, and how both have gotten her through boot camp so far.

?I expected it to be hard,? Howard said of joining the military and being away from her family. ?But you never really know how much you?ll miss people until you?re far away.?

It?s the 14th year Mt. Sinai Baptist Church has hosted recruits on Christmas, the Rev. Gerald Wilcoxon said. They never have a shortage of volunteers willing to help serve and entertain.

?It brings some Christmas joy to our sailors,? Wilcoxon said. ?But for us, it?s also the joy of knowing you?re giving back, and that is partially what Christianity is all about.?

Sabrina Estrella, 31, of San Francisco said she knew when she signed up for the Navy in early November she would have to be away from her family during the holidays, but she was willing to do whatever it takes to be a part of the military.

Originally form Brazil, Estrella said she has lived in the United States for 10 years and is looking forward to her graduation in two weeks.

?Being in the military is a dream coming true for me,? Estrella said. ?It?s my way of saying ?thank you? for all this country has given me.?

When Estrella called her sister on Sunday to wish her a Merry Christmas, her sister got emotional and was happy to hear her voice although they could not be together.

Even just taking the day to relax, sing, play games and eat a home-cooked meal with other recruits was a blessing, said Nick Quarto, 24 of Walla Walla, Wash.

?It?s wonderful what they?ve done for us,? Quarto said, enjoying the spontaneous sing-a-longs and dishes of candy on each table.

With graduation for this class of recruits coming up on Jan. 6, many of them will be seeing their families soon, but that doesn?t make being far from home during the holiday season easier, though spending the day off-base was a start.

?It almost felt like home,? Howard said.

Last-minute shoppers dash for stores

It's that time for caroling, eggnog, holiday cheer ? and for some, a frantic dash to the mall.

Last-minute shoppers hit stores on Christmas Eve in a surge that retailers hope will top off a strong holiday shopping season.

Among them was Len Boswell. He started his shopping at 6 a.m. at Starbucks. Later in the morning he was at a CVS drugstore in Decatur, Ga., picking up candy and a neck pillow for his wife.

"I should have done this a couple of weeks ago," acknowledges Boswell, 68, a director of book publishing at a nonprofit.

Stores are expected to ring up $469.1 billion during the holiday season, which runs November through December. The final week before Christmas can account for up to 20 percent of those sales. Retailers tempered their expectations heading into the season because they worried that Americans weren't ready to spend in the weak economy.

Story: Shoplifters taking bigger piece of holiday pie

But sales have been brisk during the two-month period, rising 2.5 percent from the start of the season on Nov. 1 through last Saturday, according to research firm ShopperTrak, which did not give a dollar figure. As a result, ShopperTrak upgraded its sales growth forecast to 3.7 percent from its 3 percent estimate heading into the season.

"We're seeing good traffic, good sales," said Sherif Mityas, a partner in the retail practice at A.T. Kearney, a management consulting firm. "Even with all the bad news and hesitancy in terms of the economy, consumers are still opening up their wallets more than last year, which is good news."

But at a time when Americans are still concerned about high unemployment, stagnant wages and market uncertainty, retailers aren't willing to leave anything to chance on the final shopping days before Christmas.

Toys R Us and some Macy's have been open 24 hours a day in the days leading up to Christmas. At malls, Abercrombie & Fitch has been offering a blanket 50 percent off on all items while J. Crew and Madewell offered 30 percent off. Retailers' promotional e-mails are up 34 percent from a year ago, according to Responsys, which tracks e-mail activity from more than 100 merchants.

"They're clearly putting their best foot forward on promotions right now," said John Morris, analyst at BMO Capital Markets. Morris estimates that promotional sale activity is up about 7 percent compared with last year, taking into account the level of markdowns and the amount of goods marked down.

What to shop for in the post-Christmas sales

Whether it's the sales or just plain-old procrastination, last-minute shoppers were drawn to stores across the country on Christmas Eve.

Taubman Centers, which operates malls across the country including The Mall at Short Hills in New Jersey and Beverly Center in Los Angeles, reported almost-full parking lots at some malls by 10 a.m., earlier than last year. Apparel, electronics, perfume and jewelry were among the biggest sellers.

Macy's, in New York's Herald Square, also was packed with shoppers by late morning. The store has been open around the clock since Wednesday and was set to close at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Kimberly Sylvester, 28, was out for the first time doing her holiday shopping Christmas Eve. She had already spent $160 at Victoria's Secret, taking advantage of a sale ? two bras for $40 ? for her sister. At Macy's, she picked up Lauren by Ralph Lauren sheets marked down to $79. Sylvester, who works with special needs children, said she has been too busy to shop.

Story: Shoppers winning 'game of chicken' with stores

At Manhattan Mall in New York, there was a steady stream of shoppers Saturday morning.

Shamek Shider, 22, was among them. He had spent $100 at Macy's on snow suits for his goddaughter on Friday, his first time out holiday shopping. He came back on Christmas Eve and spent $250 on jewelry and clothing at Macy's and J. C. Penney for his mother, sister and other relatives.

"This is when I see the best deals," said Shider, who lives in Newark, N.J.

Ryan Eagle, 25, planned to hit South Park Mall in Charlotte, N.C., Saturday morning to shop for presents for his wife. He always shops on Christmas Eve, he said, to get good deals and to people-watch. Last year, he found $200 boots on sale for $50 at Macy's.

"I'm a last-minute person," he said. "I enjoy going out and watching everyone run around."

Automotive Training ? What Are My Options? | DREAMHOSTERS

Breaking into ANY field is a hard thing to do! Breaking into the Automotive industry is no different. It used to be that getting ?in to? cars and automotive used to be easier and was more common because children often took classes in shop when they were in middle school. A lot of schools have stopped doing this unfortunately.

So, when a student actually dips into automotive experiences such as fixing his or her car on his or her own, or something so simple as changing a tire, they may get a feel that this is something fun which they might want to do with their lives as an adult. You might be thinking where you would be able to get automotive training if you are this type of person.

You actually have a whole slew of alternatives available to you so as to get the experience you require and be successful in this field. Firstly, you can consider an automotive school. These schools teach you about different aspects in automotive training like Service Advisor Training, Service Manager Training, Diagnostics Technology, Auto Repair Technology, etc.

Of course the Automotive Training and degree option does cost cash, so if you?re short on cash and you want to actually learn the trade before heading over to automotive training school, you might want to think about the next few options! You could work as an Intern. A lot of the schools actually provide intern programs.

You possibly won?t get paid for this, but you?ll receive lots of information about valuable on the job experience which you could use later on. You could work in a local auto shop, garage or even in a dealership. If you do plan on going for a degree later on, these Internships will oftentimes give you credit towards your degree! You could even try working as an apprentice.

These are seen less and less in the US, but they still do exist. An Apprentice is a person that has no formal education and is usually an individual who can?t afford schooling right now, but that will like to be paid for the job at hand. It?s not a ton of cash, but it is better than something like an Internship where you wouldn?t get paid at all.As an Apprentice you?ll also get a truck load of automotive training by a ?master? in the field. Last, but not least, you could also consider working smaller jobs in hopes to learn something. These smaller jobs could include changing oil in a lube shop, working behind a parts counter, busting tires part time, etc.

You can gain a ton of automotive consulting just by doing these few jobs or options. If you are not really sure if this is something you certainly want to do, I will suggest reading up on a few books and magazines for automotive consulting to see if this IS something you definitely want to do. Nothing worse than going to automotive training only to realize after you get your degree that this wasn?t actually a passion and more of a whim.

Bonds files appeal of obstruction conviction

updated 8:33 p.m. ET Dec. 22, 2011

SAN FRANCISCO - Barry Bonds is officially appealing his felony obstruction conviction.

His attorneys paid $455 and filed a one-sentence notice to the federal trial court late Wednesday, saying that Bonds was asking the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeal to toss out his conviction. The case will be randomly assigned to a three-judge panel later.

Bonds was sentenced Friday to 30 days of house arrest, two-years of probation and a $4,000 fine. But U.S. District Judge Susan Illston delayed imposition until the appeal is resolved.

Bonds appellate attorney Dennis Riordan estimated it could take as long as 18 months for a decision.

Bonds was convicted of giving an evasive answer to a grand jury investigating a Northern California-based steroids distribution ring.

Calif. teen becomes youngest to climb 7 summits

updated 8:41 p.m. ET Dec. 24, 2011

BIG BEAR, Calif. - A Southern California teenager became the youngest person to successfully climb to the summit of the seven tallest mountains on Earth's seven continents, according to his website.

Jordan Romero, 15, called his mother Leigh Ann Drake on Saturday to confirm that he'd achieved his goal of reaching the top of Mt. Vinson Massif in Antarctica.

The Big Bear, Calif.-native beat the record previously held by British climber George Atkinson, who completed the ascents at age 16 in May.

Romero's team began the climb Wednesday. Romero's Facebook page, "Find Your Everest," marked reaching the summit, but the climb is hardly over.

"It's in the books. The kid and team summit with all fingers and toes. Descent still to come then we celebrate," a post to the Facebook page read.

Romero completes the climbs with his father and stepmother.

"It's my dream we are following to the highest points on every continent," Jordan says on his blog. "I know it's a big goal and lucky for me my family is supporting me every step of the way."

At age 10, Romero climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa, and at age 13 he climbed the world's highest mountain, at 29,035 feet, Mt. Everest in Asia.

Drake declined further comment, saying the family is not seeking attention for the boy's achievement.

Washington Flails as Chaos Threatens Iraq: Will Iran Stoke or Douse the Fires? (Time.com)

Vice President Joe Biden has been on the phone to Baghdad and Erbil this week, frantically trying to coax Iraq's main political players back from the brink of a new sectarian confrontation less than a week after the last U.S. troops departed. But Iraq's political leaders paid little heed to Washington's advice and entreaties when the U.S. had 140,000 troops there; they're even less likely to comply now. Biden reportedly sought to persuade Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki to back away from a warrant issued by his government for the arrest of Iraq's most senior Sunni politician, Vice President Tareq al-Hashimi, on allegations that he was involved in a bomb plot for which members of his security detail have been detained. But Iraq's Sunni leadership sees the warrant as part of Maliki's authoritarian crackdown against his opponents, with senior Sunni leaders systematically targeted for arrest by the Shi'ite-led government in recent months.

Al-Hashimi dodged arrest by fleeing to Erbil, capital of the autonomous Kurdish zone in northern Iraq, from where he denounced the arrest warrant as a political plot and accused Maliki of amassing power in his own hands and destroying prospects for inter-sectarian accord. He also offered to stand trial on the allegations, but only in Erbil -- the implication being that he didn't believe he'd get a fair trial in Baghdad. However, there was little sign of Maliki heeding Biden's call for restraint, or calls by Kurdish leaders for an urgent national conference to discuss the widening sectarian schism in Iraqi politics. The Iraqi Prime Minister declared on TV Wednesday: "I do not allow myself and others to bargain over Iraqi blood." He demanded that the Kurdish authorities hand over al-Hashimi. "If they will not hand him over or let him flee or escape, this will lead to problems," Maliki added ominously. (See the ten grim lessons from the Iraq war.)

The move against al-Hashimi coincides with the withdrawal from parliament of the predominantly Sunni Iraqiya bloc, prompting Maliki to urge the legislature to pass a vote of no confidence in deputy prime minister Saleh al-Mutlaq, the Sunni faction's most senior figure in the legislature. And, Maliki warned, the boycott of parliament would result in Iraqiya cabinet ministers losing their positions, ending the inter-party accord that formed the basis of the agreement to seat his government. Iraqiya, whose future participation in what had been envisaged as a consensus government but has in practice been run almost entirely by Maliki's faction, now appears in doubt, accused Maliki of being "the main cause of the crisis," and urging his Shi'ite-dominated bloc to put forward an alternative candidate for prime minister.

Many of the Sunni leaders, including al-Hashimi, now support a bid by three Sunni provinces -- Anbar, Diyala and Salahuddin -- to band together into an autonomous zone on the lines that the Kurds have done. That's an outcome Maliki is determined to avoid, seeing it as strengthening a beachhead in Iraq of regional forces antagonistic to his rule. Indeed, a union of three provinces that had been the cradle of the Sunni insurgency, and which abut Syria, would strengthen the strategic challenge to Maliki in Baghdad -- even more so if President Bashar al-Assad were overthrown by Syria's Sunni majority. Sunni leaders in those provinces have spoken of Sunni insurgencies on both sides of the Syria-Iraq border amplifying one another.

The power struggle between Sunni, Shi'ite and Kurdish political factions has been waged in different forms since Saddam's fall, but it appears to have entered a new phase in recent years, once the clock began ticking down towards the U.S. withdrawal. Maliki has been widely accused of steadily amassing power, particularly through his control over the security forces, and demonstrating his intent to suppress domestic challenges to his increasingly authoritarian rule. (Read "Iraq After the War: Maliki's Attack on Sunni Leaders Suggests a Dark, Divided Future.")

The Prime Minister's attack on the Sunni political class signals a new round of political brinkmanship, with the danger of a relapse into civil war exacerbated by regional tensions, particularly between Iran -- the main outside patron of Maliki's government -- and Saudi Arabia, which has always backed the Sunnis. Those two are at loggerheads in political standoffs throughout the region, from Syria and Lebanon to Bahrain, but Turkey's growing regional influence has also antagonized Tehran. Ankara has taken a leading role in putting pressure on Iran's ally in Damascus, President Assad, over his brutal crackdown on a popular rebellion. And last year, Turkey also played a major role in creating and backing the Iraqiya bloc.

There are, of course, a number of domestic factors that might restrain Maliki from pushing the Sunnis over the edge. The Kurdish leadership is again trying to assume a mediating role whose spinoff is to strengthen the autonomy and boundaries of their de facto statelet in northern Iraq. Another key player could be Grand Ayatullah Ali Sistani, the most influential Shi'ite leader in Iraq, who has played a quiet but sometimes decisive role in shaping Iraq's post-Saddam political transition. Although Sistani comes from the "quietist" tradition that opposes Iran's system of clerical rule, he has been known to intervene in politics. Sistani forced the U.S. occupation authority to allow Iraqis to elect their own government in January of 2005, and then made sure the various Shi'ite factions didn't dilute their power by using his influence to corral them into a single political bloc. More recently, Sistani has been strongly critical of corruption and abuse of power in Maliki's government -- so much so that Maliki is reportedly colluding in efforts to install a top Iranian cleric in the Iraqi seminary city of Najaf as a counterweight to Sistani. Sistani remains the single most important leader among Iraqi Shi'ites, and he's unlikely to countenance a sectarian confrontation with the Sunnis.

The key variable, however, remains Iran. Tehran has been the biggest strategic beneficiary of the U.S. invasion, and it has been the most influential foreign power in Baghdad since the moment the U.S. allowed the Iraqis to choose their own government. (They've returned Iran-friendly Shi'ite governments at each election.) While he may be a Shi'ite partisan with an authoritarian streak, but -- contra the Saudi view -- Maliki is no puppet of Tehran. Still, he's unable to rule without Tehran's support; it was Iran's intervention that persuaded Sadr to throw his considerable parliamentary vote behind Maliki to give him the numbers necessary to keep Iraqiya out of power, after the Sunni-dominated bloc finished with more votes than any other list in the last election. (Read "U.S. Iraq Withdrawal a Gift to Iran? No, the U.S. Iraq Invasion Was the Gift to Iran.")

The question that may determine whether or not Iraq descends into sectarian confrontation, then, may be this: What does Iran want right now?

There may be an argument that stoking instability in Iraq suits Iran at a moment when Tehran is facing growing economic pressure and implied military threats over its nuclear program -- a tactic of starting fires in order to demonstrate its ability to cause problems for its adversaries. Yet, there may also be reason to believe that Iran could, in fact, decide to restrain Maliki should his actions appear to be raising the danger of renewed civil warfare. The reason is simple: The status quo put in place in Iraq by the U.S. invasion is a huge strategic gain for Tehran, which saw its most dangerous enemy -- Saddam Hussein -- replaced by an elected government dominated by its allies. The collapse of that political order in a new round of sectarian bloodshed puts Iran's post-Saddam gains at risk, also inviting its key regional opponent, Saudi Arabia, to intervene more aggressively to turn Iraq into a proxy battlefield.

Either way, Iran is unlikely to accept matters of such great strategic consequence to the Islamic Republic as a confrontation that could potentially draw in Iraq's major neighbors can be decided simply by the whims and narrow agenda of Prime Minister Maliki. At a moment when the fate of Iraq's key Arab partner, Syria's Assad, hangs in the balance, it would take a stupendous recklessness to roll the dice on its influence in Iraq, also, by encouraging Maliki to overplay his hand.

Indeed, in recent weeks, it has appeared as if Iran has been trying to ease tensions with the Saudis, sending its intelligence minister to Riyadh for talks over the alleged Washington embassy bombing plot, and backing down from opposing the Saudis' position on OPEC oil output quotas. Saudi foreign minister Prince Saud al-Faisal on Wednesday indicated a willingness to negotiate with Iran to improve recently frayed relations but also warned Iran, via a statement from the Gulf Cooperation Council, against "instigating sectarian strife" in the region.

Unless Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatullah Ali Khamenei is a more reckless gambler than most analysts know, Prime Minister Maliki may yet find the message he received from Biden discreetly but firmly reiterated by Tehran.

"It's not because someone told me that I was supposed to do it, not because I no longer want to do music anymore, but it's because it's the feeling that I felt that I need to do next in my life," he explained.

As the crowd erupted with applause, an overwhelmed Archuleta began to cry.

"It's the same feeling that I've always tried to follow in my life. It's the feeling that's allowed me to have the opportunities I've had, the challenges I've had to overcome, and the blessings, too," he added.

"I've learned that to trust that feeling. I'm aware that I need to answer when He calls, and that's the reason that I know I need to do this in my life."
