Somali, AU troops close in on Islamist stronghold

African Union and Somali government troops have made "strong progress" in a push towards an Islamist Shebab stronghold, site of the world's largest displaced people's camp, officials said Wednesday.

Hundreds of civilians have fled as long columns of Somali and AU troops backed by tanks advanced for a second day, moving from the capital Mogadishu towards Afgoye, a strategic town and a key base of the Al-Qaeda-linked Shebab fighters.

"Our forces have captured several areas, we continue our advance, and we will be in Afgoye very soon," Mohamed Ibrahim, a Somali military commander with the advancing troops, said.

AU and Somali troops have pushed at least 13 kilometres (eight miles) northwest from the capital, about halfway to Afgoye town, moving slowly down the main road known as the Afgoye corridor, where hundreds of thousands live in basic shelters.

The Shebab are "on the run" said Lieutenant General Andrew Gutti, commander of the 11,000-strong African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), claiming that the long-awaited "operation continues to make strong progress."

However, the extremist Shebab claimed to have repulsed the attack and boasted of killing several soldiers, including Western military advisors.

Witnesses reported several casualties, but the claims could not be independently verified. The Shebab also claimed to be sending reinforcements to the front line, but others suggested the insurgents were instead pulling back.

Heavy shooting and mortar fire was reported Wednesday, killing at least four civilians on the outskirts of Deynile, a suburb of Mogadishu on the road to Afgoye.

"We were preparing to leave the area because of the fighting when a mortar shell hit a house and killed four people," said Ali Yusuf, a resident.

More than 400,000 people, around one third of all the displaced people in Somalia, were living in the Afgoye corridor at the start of the year, fleeing war or drought, according to the UN, which warned that civilians must be protected.

Impoverished plastic shelters and rag and cloth huts are scattered across the arid plains where the troops are advancing.

Long lines of trucks and buses piled high with people and their belongings lined the road towards Mogadishu, defying AU calls for civilians to remain in their homes.

Mark Bowden, the UN humanitarian coordinator for Somalia, urged all sides to "minimise the impact of conflict on civilians and allow full humanitarian access to all people."

"A prolonged operation could lead to displacement, further straining the capacity of settlements and host communities in Mogadishu, or driving people away from the life-saving help they require," Bowden said in a statement.

In recent months thousands of civilians have left the Afgoye area for the capital, ahead of the expected assault on the bases to which many Shebab retreated after pulling out of fixed positions in Mogadishu last year.

"Many people are fleeing from the Afgoye corridor towards Mogadishu," said Abdi Hashi, a resident of Deynile.

"Both sides are now reinforcing their positions, and the movement of vehicles on the main Afgoye road is very limited," he added.

However, the hardline Shebab dismissed claims they had abandoned their positions on the outskirts of Deynile.

"The mujahedeen fighters fought back fiercely... the fighters blocked their ambition for advancement," Shebab spokesman Sheikh Abdulaziz Abu Musab told reporters.

"Among the casualties were Western military commanders whose injured and dead bodies were picked by helicopters from the battle zone," he added. The claims could not be confirmed.

AU and Somali troops have made significant gains in recent months against Shebab militants, although the Islamists have switched to guerrilla tactics in Mogadishu, including a series of suicide and grenade attacks.

Somalia's weak and Western-backed transitional administration has until August to set up a permanent government, but the international community has expressed concern it is failing to meet key deadlines.

The mandate of the transitional government has already been extended several times, and Western nations say it cannot be extended again.

"TEAM TALK" The Best Farm Business Management Tool I've ...

?TEAM TALK?.I believe this on-farm staff/team communication system to be the most innovative development I?ve seen in Farm Business Management for decades?

TEAM TALK is a very exciting new on-farm computer communication system that is simple to use and empowers all staff members to take responsibility for their individual roles on the farm. It permanently records what has previously been keep on hundreds of bits of paper, whiteboards and shed notice boards.

TEAM TALK does not replace good person to person communication on a farm but enhances it significantly. I see it as being like a computerised template that with Ginny Neal?s help you can create a unique system tailor made for your farm & your team of staff. I imagine that each farm will develop a personalised or custom made TEAM TALK system for their own farm.?

?I?m very impressed!

?TEAM TALK? has been created by Ginny & Stu Neal (Farm Manager at Castlepoint Station, a large sheep & beef station on the South Wairarapa coast of New Zealand). Stu was a participant in the Rabobank Farm Managers Course where they had to do an individual project as part of the course. http://www.rabobank.co.nz/Rural/Education/Pages/FMP.aspx

They are in celebration mode as Stu has been notified that he was one of the 3 finalists from last year?s Rabobank Farm Managers? Course in Brisbane chosen to go back this year to present their project??..his of course being the TEAM TALK now implemented at Castlepoint Station. Castlepoint Station owned by Anders & Emily Crofoot, who recently won the Wairarapa Hill Country Farm Business Award, in part due to the excellent staff communication system. Ginny Neal was until very recently a local country school teacher, now she has set up her own company AgRecord, to help other farmers to use & implement TEAM TALK on their farms & with their teams of staff.

AgRecord's flagship system is called TEAM TALK. It can be best described as an on-line internal communication system which assists with the efficient and effective day to day running of agri-businesses.?

?TEAM TALK is completely individualised for each business and can either be started from scratch or include existing documentation.? The concept itself is completely new to the agri-business industry and has already revolutionised the businesses it is being used by.?

?TEAM TALK encourages staff members to be a part of the business by ensuring accountability for pasture measuring, tallies, quantities, weights etc that they add.? One of its main features is the ability to store all information in one place thus replacing the 'bits of paper'? that never actually end up being recorded or they get lost.
? Users access TEAM TALK by logging in via the internet ? this means it is accessible from any mobile or wi-fi capable device such as a phone, ipad, laptop etc and from anywhere in the world.??
It is a powerful tool for absentee owners or those that spend a lot of time away from the farm/office.? Staff/members can also access it 24 hours a day 7 days a week allowing them to enter information when and where it suits them.? Clients can contact AgRecord via Skype meetings and have their tailor-made system designed for them without even having to meet.? This is a huge saving on time and travel for both Client and AgRecord and allows you to spend this time actually creating the system for your farm team.

AgRecord ?provide the client with regular updates on their system build and can even share what it is looking like during the design process ensuring it meets the clients requirements.

The TEAM TALK concept was adapted by Ginny Neal from a platform she has been using in schools for a number of years.? Ginny has grown up farming and has a background in educational management and many years of experience in IT.

Clients so far have included the following on their TEAM TALK system:

?Work schedules?

?Stock rotations

Key events & activities?

?Current hazards list

?Animal Health Plan

?Maps of the property

?Repairs and maintenance schedule

?Plant and machinery maintenance schedule

?Movements of team members over the week (leave, off- farm activities etc)

?Health and safety programme

?Inventory of sundries etc quad tyres, workshop supplies

?Chemical inventories and spray records

?Staff leave form

?HR policies etc Health and safety videos

?Live calendar

?Stud stock information

?Milking information

?Rainfall

?Videos/photos

?The list is limitless.....each system is completely different depending on the needs or requirements of each agribusiness.?
Pasture wedge graphs can/could be entered by one staff member & shared with everyone. Your "Team" might include the Farm Consultant or Vet. If a staff member leaves your team they can no longer participate in TEAM TALK.

All this information is ordered chronologically and all past records are stored on the system, thus building up 'history'.? The functionality of TEAM TALK is very straightforward: -

?The person designated as the system manager has ultimate control over what goes on and stays on the information system.

?The platform is only accessible by those the system manager has invited to? 'belong'.

?Team members can contribute information (e.g. stock weights, tallies) and any entry sends an alert to the system manager.

?Maps, spreadsheets and pictures, videos, live calendars can be readily imported into the platform.

?It has safety features that make it 'Herd Manager/shepherd/staff proof'.

?It is accessible from anywhere in the world as it is stored on the web.? Users can access it from any mobile Smart Phone or wi-fi device if not in front of their desktop.

What I really like about TEAM TALK is that it has been created in the farm kitchen, by a Farm Manager, his very creative wife & a real life farm team, on an innovative award winning farm.?
It?s an extra ordinary new Farm Business Management tool which I think you should investigate.

Robert Rodriguez Talks Sin City and Machete Sequels

sin city 2 machete kills sequel robert rodriguez production

Following a year of rumors about Robert Rodriguez? next directorial choice,?the filmmaker has confirmed that he will be shooting the sequels Machete Kills and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For back-to-back this summer.

As additional insurance that Sin City 2 will?be arriver sooner than later ? the film now has an October 2013 release date ? and has been confirmed for 3D.

Empire managed to catch up with (or corner, if you prefer) Rodriguez while he was in attendance at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. The director had some eyebrow-raising information to offer about both the Machete and?Sin City sequel ? beginning with his promise that A Dame to Kill For will imitate the drawing style of Frank Miller?s source material, more than its predecessor:

?I really held back the first time, because I didn?t know whether audiences would go for it. So it ended up looking like a real movie, but in black and white, with a few flourishes. This one is going to push way further towards the books. It?s going to shock and surprise people.?

As stylized as the original Sin City movie is, Rodriguez does have a point. Visually, the flick is more akin to a classic piece of Film Noir (The Maltese Falcon, Touch of Evil, etc.), had it been made using modern-era, digital technology ? whereas the black-ink-on-white aesthetic of Miller?s comic book(s) is far less photo-realistic, in how it portrays the citizens and monuments that make up Basin City (see below, for case in point).

Rodriguez was otherwise pretty coy about what to expect from A Dame to Kill For (pun intended) during his conversation with Empire. He reiterated the claim made in Dimension Films? recent press release about the film ? namely, that some?seriously big names??are being eyed as potentials to join the Sin City 2 cast ? but otherwise kept his lips shut about the project.

frank miller sin city 2 comic book

An illustration from Miller's 'Sin City: That Yellow Bastard' comic

While Mickey Rourke and Jessica Alba have been officially confirmed for the Sin City sequel, Clive Owen?s involvement (or lack thereof) remains up in the air. Rodriguez also wouldn?t say anything about who is up to portray the titular femme fatale ? only describing the role as ?a great part for any actress. She?s completely diabolical with no mercy. She?s as evil as evil gets.?

Angelina Jolie has long been rumored to portray said character (named Ava Lord), but we all?know better than to accept a longtime Internet rumor as fact ? something that Rodriguez called attention to, when he also offered the following tidbit about the storyline for the Machete sequel:

?That synopsis we put out is misdirection ? it?s all fake. Machete is recruited by the President, that?s true, but there?s no cartel leader and the weapon in space is just one of our early story ideas. That said, there is still a space element, for sure. We?ve given the character a much bigger playground. It?s going to be like a James Bond movie, with a Bond-style villain.?

For those not up to speed: the Machete Kills synopsis that?s been circulating for the past several months pegged the eponymous ex-federale (Danny Trejo) as heading on down to Mexico, where he would face-off against a drug cartel head -?and?a maniacal U.S. billionaire (Mel Gibson?s presumed role), hell-bent on building a doomsday weapon.

machete kills sequel danny trejo

Danny Trejo as Machete

Although Rodriguez? statement suggests that the rumors about Machete heading into space in a third installment aren?t true after all, that doesn?t mean Gibson won?t still be playing the aforementioned villain ? who certainly sounds?like a baddie right out of a James Bond movie. Once again, Rodriguez was vague about the exact details, but promised that Gibson ?won?t just be [grinning], doing bad-guy stuff.?He?s going to do something with it that?ll really get people talking.?

Much like A Dame to Kill For, Rodriguez? plan with Machete Kills appears to be pretty simple: make it bigger and?badder than its predecessor, in terms of sheer star power and?body count. The majority of fans seem much more excited for the next Sin City movie than the Machete sequel ? but both have the potential to be pretty tasty pieces of pulpy entertainment.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For arrives in theaters around the U.S. on October 4th, 2013.

We will let you know when Machete Kills snags a release date.

Comcast's 'Project Dayview' project does PDA duty across TV, phone, PC and tablet

While we expected to see Comcast roll out its X1 DVR platform today at the Cable Show, more surprising is the new Project Dayview initiative. As seen above, it attempts to provide a single cross-platform home screen that combines info from its services and third party sources to give customers a quick look at what's important to them, on any screen. Potential sources include Comcast services (DVR schedule from your cable box, voicemails from the home phone, email, or home security / automation updates when you're away) as well as third party information like your current calendar software, social media and local news. While ambitious, it does reflect a futuristic ability to bring its users relevant information (based on the time of day, it could pull the traffic report before you leave for work or TV listings in the evening, for example) automatically. How well it all works remains to be seen once this is integrated with the new DVR software and apps later this year, but you can get an idea of what Comcast has up its sleeve for your four screens from the pictures in the gallery below.

Solar eclipse: How to safely watch this evening's 'ring of fire'

During this evening's 'ring of fire' solar eclipse, what should be a spectacular display will be seen across much of the American West. Here's how to watch it safely.

By Brad Knickerbocker,?Staff writer / May 20, 2012

The sun is seen partially blocked by the moon through ceilings of ancient buildings during a solar eclipse in central China in 2010.

Alexander F. Yuan/AP

If you?re one of the lucky ones living across a broad swath of the United States from the Pacific Northwest to north Texas, you?re in for a rare treat this evening.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "off"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

It?s called an ?annular solar eclipse,? which happens when the moon slides over the sun, blocking out the center and leaving a glowing ring called an ?annulus.?

We could get into ?umbra,? ?penumbra,? and ?antumbra? but you?ll have to Google those yourselves. The main thing is, the difference between an annular solar eclipse and a total eclipse of the sun has to do with how far away the moon is from the earth.

The closer to the earth it is, the larger the moon appears ? blocking out more of the sun. When the moon is farther away from the earth, it appears smaller, leaving that ?ring of fire? when it appears to pass in front of the sun. Right now, the moon is at its greatest distance from the earth, hence an especially wide fiery ring.

Actually, it?s not only Americans along that swath who?ll be able to witness this very occasional solar-lunar event. (The last one was in 1994.)

It?ll start in southern China, then move across the southern coast of Japan, crossing the Pacific just south of the Aleutian Islands before hitting the US near the Oregon-California border. (Speaking of ?ring of fire,? the Aleutians are part of another ?ring of fire? ? the volcanic rim around the Pacific from South America to New Zealand. It has nothing to do with Johnny Cash, however.)

These graphics by the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office are especially good.

The main advice in observing this evening?s annular eclipse and its ?ring of fire? is be careful.

Ron Hipschman, who describes himself on Twitter as the ?loose cannon at the Exploratorium? in San Francisco, offers this warning:

?As a kid, did you ever take a magnifying glass out into the sun and burn leaves? If so, you probably remember that when the focused sunlight coming through the lens was refracted and concentrated to a small spot, the energy available there was truly remarkable. Guess what? You have a lens just like that in your eye. If you look at the sun, your eye-lens will concentrate the sun's light and focus it to a very small spot on the back of your retina. This can cause permanent eye damage or blindness. Additionally, there are no pain sensors back there so you won't even know it's happening! Have I scared the willies out of you? Good!?

On this website, Mr. Hipschman gives directions for safely observing any solar eclipse.

As you might have done in your junior high school science class, you can build a pinhole projector using a long box, a piece of aluminum foil, a pin, and a sheet of white paper. What a great opportunity to do something with your kids!

This site shows how to build such a projector using a dark-colored plastic cup, wax paper, scissors, a rubber band, and a pushpin. The Clark Planetarium in Salt Lake City has good directions for making a simple pinhole projector here.

?Getting even more basic, you can use your own hands,? Hipschman explains. ?Just hold up both hands with your fingers overlapping at right angles. The holes between your fingers make pinholes.?

Clark Planetarium director Seth Jarvis says forget about the old suggestions of putting soot from a candle flame on a piece of glass, using exposed black-and-white film, or doubling up on sunglasses. None offer adequate protection, and he recommends against trying to use welder?s goggles to peer at the sun unless they are rated for arc-welding (at least grade 14).

So enjoy this evening?s light show, but do it carefully.

Dewey to consider bankruptcy filing: source - Financial News

A man moves boxes out of the offices of Dewey & LeBoeuf in New York

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Ailing law firm Dewey & LeBoeuf is considering a bankruptcy filing as new debtholders take a more aggressive track, shifting away from earlier attempts at an out-of-court liquidation, a person familiar with the matter said on Friday.

The majority of Dewey's partners have quit as a result of concerns about compensation, and $225 million in bank loans and bond debt.

Buyers of distressed debt who have acquired Dewey's debt at a discount on the secondary market are more open to seeing the firm wound down in bankruptcy court rather than out of it, said the person, who requested anonymity because the information was not public.

With the emergence of new creditors, Dewey on Tuesday replaced restructuring adviser Development Specialists Inc. (DSI) with competitor Zolfo Cooper. Joff Mitchell, a senior managing director at Zolfo, is now Dewey's chief restructuring officer, two people familiar with the situation said.

Bill Brandt, chief executive of DSI, confirmed that his firm's involvement in the matter was coming to an end.

"Our firm is transitioning out," Brandt said. "We've been replaced by Zolfo at the insistence of the debt holders. It now becomes a creditor-driven case."

A bankruptcy filing is not certain, and the timing of any potential filing remains unclear. The firm has been consulting with restructuring lawyers since April at the latest, and has retained bankruptcy attorney Albert Togut of law firm Togut Segal & Segal.

Neither Stephen Horvath III, Dewey's executive partner, nor Janis Meyer, its general counsel, responded to requests for comment. Mitchell and a spokesperson for Zolfo also did not respond to requests for comment.

Togut did not respond to a request for comment on Friday.

A spokesman for the firm's primary bank lender, JPMorgan Chase & Co, declined to comment late on Friday.

Once one of the largest law firms in the United States, Dewey & LeBoeuf has lost all but a handful of the 300 partners with which it opened 2012. It has laid off 433 of 533 employees in New York, according to the New York State Labor Department.

Dewey's debtholders have been selling their stakes during the firm's downfall. As of May 3, bankruptcy analyst Kevin Starke of CRT Capital Group said Dewey's $150 million in notes privately placed following a 2010 bond offering were trading at between 45 cents and 55 cents on the dollar on the secondary market.

The shift toward a possible bankruptcy filing would be a major change in direction. As recently as March 12, Martin Bienenstock, formerly a top bankruptcy partner at Dewey and an outgoing member of the firm's office of the chairman, told the Wall Street Journal that the firm had "no plan to file a Chapter 11 bankruptcy."

"We've had a completely non-adversarial relationship with our lenders, and right now the cash we're using is the lender's collateral," he said at the time.

Bienenstock did not respond to a request for comment late on Friday. He was one of four members of Dewey's top management team, the office of the chairman, to decamp to other firms in recent days, joining Proskauer Rose. The last member of that office, Washington, D.C., lobbyist L. Charles Landgraf, said he had joined Arnold & Porter on Wednesday.

Lawsuits are mounting against Dewey. The U.S. Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation sued the firm Monday in Manhattan federal district court in order to take control of three of the firm's pension plans, which the agency said were underfunded by $80 million.

Bankruptcies are often driven by creditors. On Wednesday, Annette Jarvis of Dorsey & Whitney, a bankruptcy lawyer who represents a group of 51 retired pension partners at Dewey predecessor LeBoeuf Lamb Greene & MacRae, said that in her view the firm "has to be put into a bankruptcy."

Jarvis did not respond to a request for comment on Friday.

Health Clubs are Thinking Outside the Box

8 Cool Ways Health Clubs are Thinking Outside the Box, Shrinking Waistlines

By David Roddenberry

?

Health club memberships in the U.S. have leveled out over the last 20-years while the obesity epidemic has ballooned. In light of this disparity, many health clubs are increasingly adopting unconventional programs to bolster their membership base and better motivate the marketplace to get fit, trim and healthy.

?

?Amid the growing rate of obesity in the U.S., health clubs are continually challenged to drive new memberships and inspire current members to visit their facilities for workouts with some regularity to get, and keep, them on a healthy track,? notes Kelli Calabrese, international fitness, nutrition and lifestyle specialist twice named ?Personal Trainer of the Year.? ?I applaud the health club community for integrating new, exciting and innovative ways to attract and engage members to keep their fitness lifestyle fresh, fun and frequent?and even profitable!?

?

Here are a few cool new programs now underway:
1. Whole-Life Training. ?Health club facilities are now looking beyond just the exercise component of fostering a healthy lifestyle. ?In addition to personal training staff, today?s progressive health clubs are boasting on-site nutritionists and other allied healthcare professionals like?physical therapists and even psychologists.? These value added services holistically address all areas of a member?s life that impact their overall well-being, health and happiness. Chinese activist who fled house arrest lands in US

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ? A blind Chinese legal activist who was suddenly allowed to leave the country arrived in the U.S. on Saturday, ending a nearly monthlong diplomatic tussle that had tested U.S.-China relations.

Chen Guangcheng had been hurriedly taken from a hospital hours earlier and put on a plane for the United States after Chinese authorities suddenly told him to pack and prepare to leave. He arrived Saturday evening at Newark Liberty International Airport, outside New York City.

The departure of Chen, his wife and two children to the United States marked the conclusion of nearly a month of uncertainty and years of mistreatment by local authorities for the self-taught activist.

After seven years of prison and house arrest, Chen made a daring escape from his rural village in April and was given sanctuary inside the U.S. Embassy, triggering a diplomatic standoff over his fate. With Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in Beijing for annual high-level discussions, officials struck a deal that let Chen walk free, only to see him have second thoughts. That forced new negotiations that led to an agreement to send him to the U.S. to study law, a goal of his, at New York University.

"Thousands of thoughts are surging to my mind," Chen said before he left China. His concerns, he said, included whether authorities would retaliate for his negotiated departure by punishing his relatives left behind. It also was unclear whether the government will allow him to return.

Chen's expected attendance at New York University comes from his association with Jerome Cohen, a law professor there who advised Chen while he was in the U.S. Embassy. The two met when Chen came to the United States on a State Department program in 2003, and Cohen has been staunch advocate for him since.

"I'm very happy at the news that he's on his way and I look forward to welcoming him and his family tonight and to working with him on his course of study," Cohen said.

Chen will live at the Washington Square Village complex, a New York University housing facility where faculty and graduate students reside, an NYU spokesman said.

Before he left China, Chen asked his supporters and others in the activist community for their understanding of his desire to leave the front lines of the rights struggle in China.

"I am requesting a leave of absence, and I hope that they will understand," he said.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland praised the quiet negotiations that freed him.

"We also express our appreciation for the manner in which we were able to resolve this matter and to support Mr. Chen's desire to study in the U.S. and pursue his goals," Nuland said in a statement.

The White House also said it was pleased with the outcome of negotiations.

China's Foreign Ministry said it had no comment. The government's news agency, Xinhua, issued a brief report saying that Chen "has applied for study in the United States via normal channels in line with the law."

Chen's supporters welcomed his departure. "This is great progress," said U.S.-based rights activist Bob Fu. "It's a victory for freedom fighters."

The 40-year-old Chen is emblematic of a new breed of activists that the Communist Party finds threatening. Often from rural and working-class families, these "rights defenders," as they are called, are unlike the students and intellectuals from the elite academies and major cities of previous democracy movements and thus could potentially appeal to ordinary Chinese.

Chen gained recognition for crusading for the disabled and for farmers' rights and fighting against forced abortions in his rural community. That angered local officials, who seemed to wage a personal vendetta against him, convicting him in 2006 on what his supporters say were fabricated charges and then holding him for the past 20 months in illegal house arrest.

Even with the backstage negotiations, Chen's departure came hastily. Chen spent the last 2 1/2 weeks in a hospital for the foot he broke escaping house arrest. Only on Wednesday did Chinese authorities help him complete the paperwork needed for his passport.

Chen said by telephone Saturday that he was informed at the hospital just before noon to pack his bags to leave. Officials did not give him and his family passports or inform them of their flight details until after they got to the airport.

Seeming ambivalent, Chen said that he was "not happy" about leaving and that he had a lot on his mind, including worries about retaliation against his extended family back home. His nephew, Chen Kegui, is accused of attempted murder after he allegedly used a kitchen knife to attack officials who stormed his house after discovering Chen Guangcheng was missing.

"I hope that the government will fulfill the promises it made to me, all of its promises," Chen said. Such promises included launching an investigation into abuses against him and his family in Shandong province, he said before the phone call was cut off.

Much as Chen has said he wants return to China, it remains uncertain whether the Chinese government would bar him, as they have done with many exiled activists.

"Chen's departure for the U.S. does not and should not in any way mark a 'mission accomplished' moment for the U.S. government," said Phelim Kine, a senior Asia researcher at Human Rights Watch. "The harder, longer-term part is ensuring his right under international law to return to China when he sees fit."
