Bookshelf Spotlight: Minangkabau Culture & Identity | The Center for ...

The Minangkabau Response to Dutch Colonial Rule in the Nineteenth Century

by Elizabeth E. Graves
University Of Hawai?i Press, 2010

?Despite the considerable expansion of scholarly studies of Minangkabau society in recent years, the paucity of historical research on West Sumatra is still notable. Especially is this so for the nineteenth century, where, apart from the new perspectives provided in Christine Dobbin?s series of articles on the Padri Wars, virtually nothing has been published during the past decade. A significant study dealing with this period that certainly merited publication was the 1971 University of Wisconsin dissertation of Elizabeth E. Graves, which, following her revision, we are now pleased to bring out in our Monograph Series. In this revision Dr. Graves was not able to draw on Dobbin?s work and other germane material published during the last few years, but most of the data she has marshaled and analyzed cannot be found in other published sources, and there is no doubt that her monograph fills many of the extensive gaps in our knowledge of nineteenth century Minangkabau society and its interaction with Dutch political and economic power. Moreover, those familiar with Taufik Abdullah?s classic study, Schools and Politics: The Kaum Muda in West Sumatra (1927?1933), will find an excellent complement in her chapters on the development of secular education during this earlier period.

?In publishing this study, the Cornell Modern Indonesia Project is confident that it provides an important addition to the regional dimension of Indonesian history and illuminating insights into the shaping of nineteenth century Minangkabau society and the way its character set the stage for better known developments in the present century.? ?George McT. Kahin

Constituting the Minangkabau

by Joel S. Kahn
Berg Publishers, 1993

This account of culture and society in the villages of West Sumatra, Indonesia, during the period of Dutch colonialism is based on materials collected from the colonial archives, local Indonesian newspapers and recent fieldwork in Malaysia and Indonesia. The author argues that the impact of colonial land-grabbing and political control led to the formation of a peasant economy in the period.

At the same time, the author tackles issues in the recent anthropological debates about ethnography and culture to argue that this period also witnessed the construction of what we now call ?Minangkabau Culture? ? a process that involved western ethnographers, colonial officials and Minangkabau intellectuals in an often conflicted process of modern cultural transformation.

Between Individualism and Mutual Help: Social Security and Natural Resources in a Minangkabau Village

by Renske Biezeveld
Eburon Publishers, Delft, 2004

This book deals with the role of natural resources for social security and livelihood in a Minangkabau village in West Sumatra. First of all it touches on problems of property rights; an analysis of communal land rights in this matrilineal society, the clash between adat and state law and perceived changes therein.

Matriliny and Migration: Evolving Minangkabau Traditions in Indonesia

by Tsuyoshi Kato
Equinox Publishing, 2007; First published 1981

The Minangkabau, who are from the mountainous region of western Sumatra, have long been a tangle of paradoxes to the outsider. Ardent believers in Islam ? a partially orientated religion ? the Minangkabau are one of the few remaining matrilineal groups in the world. A well-educated and enterprising people, they continue to uphold a seemingly archaic kinship system. They have always been highly mobile, yet their strong sense of ethnic identity is rooted in their homeland. Focusing on Minangkabau matriliny and its relation to migration, Tsuyoshi Kato has written a comprehensive and authoritative study of the society, history, and traditions of this complex people. Studies of the Minangkabau since the middle of the nineteenth century have often indicated that matriliny is giving way to a bilateral or even patrilineally inclined system. Kato, however, asserts that the matrilineal system is surviving, owing to Minangkabau mobility. Exploring matriliny?s evolution in response to changing times, he studies the reasons for the tradition?s resilience. Kato adopts an historical approach, claiming that a static analysis can capture only part ? or seemingly contradictory parts ? of a complex and changing culture. He examines different types of migration that characterizes three distinct historical periods: village segmentation ? a migration to establish new settlements ? which took place up until the mid-nineteenth century; circulatory migration to small towns and markets by individual males, a distinguishing feature of the period from the late nineteenth century to the 1930s; and the more permanent Chinese migration, in which nuclear families leave the village for larger cities, a pattern thatcontinues today. Kato bases his analysis on his extensive field work in Sumatra and on such varied evidence as recent census data and Minangkabau proverbs and legends. Matriliny and Migration, now brought back to life as a member of Equinox Publishing?s Classic Indonesia series, is a balanced account of change and continuity in a society. It will appeal to readers interested in Southeast Asia and to sociologists and anthropologists studying the family, urbanization, mobility, and the question of ethnic identity.

Minangkabau Social Formations: Indonesian Peasants and the World-Economy

by Joel S. Kahn
Cambridge University Press, 1981

In this anthropological investigation of the nature of an underdeveloped peasant economy, Joel S. Kahn attempts to develop the insights generated by Marxist theorists, by means of a concrete case study of a peasant village in the Indonesian province of West Sumatra. He accounts for the specific features of this regional economy, and, at the same time, examines the implications for it of the centuries-old European domination of Indonesia. The most striking feature of the Minangkabau economy is the predominance of petty commodity relations in agriculture, handicrafts and the local network of distribution. Dr Kahn illustrates this with material on local economic organization, which he collected in the field in the highland village of Sungai Puar, the site of a blacksmithing industry, and with published and unpublished data from other parts of Indonesia. Dr Kahn?s book is unusual for its combination of a theoretical analysis of underdevelopment with a detailed regional study. It will appeal to those interested in South-east Asian studies, in development, and in neo-Marxist approaches in anthropology.

Theater & Martial Arts In West Sumatra: Randai & Silek of the Minangkabau

by Kirstin Pauka
Ohio University Press, 1999

Randai, the popular folk theater tradition of the Minangkabau ethnic group in West Sumatra, has evolved to include influences of martial arts, storytelling, and folk songs. Theater and Martial Arts in West Sumatra describes the origin, development, and cultural background of randai and highlights two recent developments: the emergence of female performers and modern staging techniques.

This book also explores the indigenous martial arts form silek, a vital part of randai today. The strong presence of silek is illustrated in the martial focus of the stories that are told through randai, in its movement repertoire, and even in its costumes and musical accompaniment. As Kirstin Pauka shows, randai, firmly rooted in silek and Minangkabau tradition, is an intriguing mirror of the Minangkabau culture.

Internet Video Hosting Strategies and Tips ? A SPN Exclusive Article ...

Video Marketing for small business is growing in significance in the media-rich, entertain me culture we now live in. That much we know. To show your video clips on your site, there are a number of details you should take into account on how to serve up your video files, because they tend to get large and load slowly, so utilizing a service in the cloud to host your videos that has mega-capacity and specializes in streaming video is an excellent idea. It ultimately comes down to ease of use versus control, with a smidgen of quality and user-experience mixed in.

Video Streaming Services

There are virtually dozens of qualified video hosting sites available you can utilize, and this is not the place to analyze them all. Some you?ve heard of, some you haven?t. I?ll detail and link to some of the top dogs here for both free and paid video sharing services. You can click on the links and test them out and decide which is best for you.

Free Sharing Services

* YouTube ? The ruler of them all. World?s premiere video sharing website. At first videos limited to 15 minutes (used to be 10) but if you put enough of them up, you can get allocated unrestricted length rights.

* Vimeo ? Akin to YouTube, but less popular.

* Viddler ? Free service available, a bit more customizable than YouTube; paid B2B service also.

* Google Videos ? Part of the Google collection; permits you to sell your video downloads.

* Yahoo Videos ? Options include a search across hosting platforms.

* Metacafe ? Highly rated free service for service and formats used.

* Daily Motion ? Sorted videos into social networking.

Paid Video Sharing Sites

* Playstream ? Larger volume storage video streamer.

* On Stream Media ? Comparable to Playstream.

* Amazon S3 ? Not a video sharing site per se, but remarkably inexpensive large cloud storage that works in combination with the EZ Player or other players for fast video streaming on your site.

* Viddler B2B ? Designed for business, secure white-label, unbranded options, but begins at $ 100/month.

Options for Small Businesses

If your business is not video production but something else, in most situations you can stream video to your website using any of the cost-free video sharing options listed above, YouTube being the most popular. Many of my customers are consultants, architects, attorneys ? people in white collar positions, and they use video interviews or some other format to feature their value for site viewers. There are details you should know about free and paid video streaming options and questions you should keep in mind.

What to Keep in Mind with Free Video Hosting

I?ll use YouTube for this conversation considering it is where most of my video customers store their videos for streaming on their blogs.

* It is generally simple to establish an account and load videos on free video sharing websites.

* YouTube takes most file formats and transforms them to .mp4 or .flv (flash) for playback.

* YouTube has a huge search engine and is loved by its parent, Google, so getting your public videos discovered is more likely from an SEO point of view (which also helps your site). You can also restrict access to videos e.g. available only to associates.

* Reasonable analytics and ability to style your channel.

* Easy to embed player for your blog.

* Recognizable with the YouTube icon in the corner and can literally lead to more clicks.

These are all advantages, but like all Free options, they get paid somehow in some way, and if you?re not careful can pull visitors away from your video to other videos. You also relinquish a bit of control when using a complementary service like YouTube or Vimeo.

* YouTube curbs videos to 15 minutes. Typically for power users YouTube will upgrade you to unrestricted video upload file size, but you never know when this will take place. I was fortunate and use longer videos for my Vlogs on the Smart Blog.

* As a basic feature, YouTube samples other people?s videos at the end to yours in addition to a ?replay video? choice. The good news is that you can disable this in your embed code.

* If a viewer clicks through to your channel, the blog comments are outside of your control, so unsatisfied customers can post hostile comments and hurt your reputation.

* YouTube is in absolute control. Make sure all your videos are backed up on your hosting server because people have been closed down, even big users, for no clear cause. This is a rare occurrence but a risk.

The good news is, for small businesses with just a handful of videos to market products and services, these hazards are acceptable. Most people will watch the video on your site. If you correctly embed the player code (and not link away to the YouTube site), you minimize the possibility that other videos might lure users away.

Paid Video Sharing: What You Need to Know

I?ll use the increasingly popular Amazon S3 hosting service as an example, suggested to me by my friend Phil Montero of The Anywhere Office. S3 stands for Simple Storage Service and is a good alternative to free video hosting sites.

* Any size video uploads right out of the gate.

* Video is protected so it is only accessible where you provide the player and stream it. S3 is a storing option, not a video sharing website per se.

* Very inexpensive for a dedicated storage solution ($ 0.14 / GB per month).

* Your video is your video, with no links to other people?s videos, ads, etc?

However, Amazon S3 has its drawbacks also?

* S3 isn?t so simple, and there is some tech knowledge required to get set up, upload files, and install what normally is a paid player on your site. Not for the do-it-yourselfer, unless you are a tech geek.

* It?s not a search engine nor catalogued, so S3 doesn?t aid your off-site SEO.

Suggestions for Business Video Streaming

For most marketing video, you want it seen by as many people as possible. Sites like YouTube make that easy, offering fairly high-speed streaming embeds for streaming on your website. You may have to link out, however, on your social media profiles. Your YouTube channel can be searched and rated by Google, and the video clip on your page can be search engine optimized. Given its ease of use and findability, I suggest using YouTube for your marketing videos.

However, if you are creating paid video content such as course material, you may want to restrict accessibility to your paid members and get the professional, won?t link away capability offered by a service like Amazon S3, where you are in control and get the same streaming speed (or faster) as the free hosting options.

Depending on your business needs and use, a combined technique could provide you with the best of both worlds ? control and public accessibility.

Lawsuit seeks to block Google's privacy changes

(AP) ? A consumer watchdog group is suing the Federal Trade Commission in an attempt to prevent Google from making sweeping changes to its privacy policies next month.

The planned revisions would enable Google Inc. to bundle the personal information gathered by its Internet search engine and other services, such as Gmail, YouTube and Plus, so the company can gain a better understanding of its users and potentially sell more advertising. Google has depicted the switch as an improvement that will make its privacy policies easier to understand and help deliver more helpful information to users.

But the Electronic Privacy Information Center contends Google's new policies would violate restrictions imposed in an agreement reached with the FTC last year. Google submitted to the rules to resolve complaints that the company had improperly exposed users' email contacts in a now-defunct service called Buzz.

A lawsuit filed Wednesday by EPIC maintains the agreement gives FTC the power to stop Google from making the planned privacy change. The complaint also is seeking an order from a Washington federal court to block Google's policy changes from taking effect March 1.

European regulators already have asked Google to delay the policy changes

Among other things, EPIC alleges Google's new privacy guidelines require users' consent. The group also alleges Google hasn't thoroughly explained the motives for the changes, making it an "unfair and deceptive business practice."

In a statement, Google said it has gone to great lengths to explain the changes to users since announcing the planned switch two weeks ago. The Mountain View, Calif., company previously has said it explained the privacy revisions to the FTC.

"We take privacy very seriously," Google said. "We're happy to engage in constructive conversations about our updated privacy policy, but EPIC is wrong on the facts and the law."

FTC spokeswoman Claudia Bourne Farrell said agency "takes compliance with our consent orders very seriously and always looks carefully at any evidence that they are being violated."

A New Body Language Attraction System? | self improvement ...

?definitely I wanted him to have my number. ? Actually, it wasn?t really what he said to me. It was the way he handled himself?.?

This is what I heard as I guiltily eavesdropped on a conversation between 3 women on a train the other day. I was really curious and also surprised by what I heard because I always thought you got a ladies phone number by what you say and not what your body language was doing.

However, a little fact bubbled up into my mind, reminding me that body language happens on a subconscious level and either you have it as a guy or you don?t.

I was just deciding to throw the thought out of my head, when I realized I could check Wikipedia and found that, as stated by James Borg, ? communication consists of 93 per cent body language?..and 7% only of communication is made up of words themselves.

This hit me like a train. Why had I been putting so much emphasis on what I said to women? Probably because I?ve been conditioned to think this way; all those American films where the guy goes up to the girl at the bar and wins her over with the perfect one liner. So what the heck is body language?

Most of the time I?m not that conscious of my body, but then there are other times when I feel really body-conscious, and I have to admit it?s when I?m feeling good about myself.

Is there anything we can actually do about our body language attraction? And if it?s true, is it effective to change our body language to improve our self-esteem? and probably more importantly to attract the opposite sex?

I know from my own experience and reading that some of the most powerful spiritual methods since the turn of the century, like Alcohol Anonymous, 12 step recovery and Landmark, all place great emphasis on acting yourself into a whole new way of thinking.

So I supposed why on earth we couldn?t do the same with body language?

And when you look at the huge percentage of our communication which is achieved through ours bodies, had anyone really looked into how to harness this power of body language to not only change our inner being but also to attract a mate. A new system called body language attraction.

I did a bit of research and wasn?t particularly impressed with what I found until I clicked on Rob Brinded?s, codeofthenatural.com.

Curious to find more about a free report into ?top 10 secrets to reprogram your body language to trigger attraction in women?, I eventually had to buy his multimedia eBook and have, much to my surprise, that his work is highly effective and thoroughly under-priced for what you get.

In doing probably about 5 minutes of movements a day my confidence and self-esteem has really improved, and I have noticed women staring at me for the first time in my life!

For me body language attraction has been totally missed as a concept, which for me is unbelievable ? there really IS something extremely powerful this body language system.

Funnily enough we have been much slower that our friends in the animal kingdom in understanding the huge role of body language in attracting the opposite sex. I?m going to show a lot more respect to the stars of David Attenboroughs next documentary and look for more lessons that I can use in my world.

Want to find out more about Body Language, then visit Rob Brinded?s site on how to choose the best Body Language Attraction solution for your needs.

Panel: Fire Ct. police chief amid racial turmoil (AP)

EAST HAVEN, Conn. ? Police commissioners in East Haven voted unanimously Tuesday to recommend that the mayor fire the police chief instead of letting him retire amid allegations that officers abused Latinos.

In a 5-0 vote, the commissioners recommended that Leonard Gallo be fired. Among their accusations, they said he failed to provide leadership, which was evident in last week's arrest of four town officers.

The officers have been accused of waging a campaign against Latinos that included beatings and false arrests. They have pleaded not guilty.

Mayor Joseph Maturo Jr. is not obligated to follow the commission's recommendation and is expected to ignore it. In announcing Gallo's retirement Monday, the mayor said the chief acted selflessly. He praised Gallo, saying he performed admirably and was a devoted public servant.

Gallo's lawyer, Jon Einhorn, did not address the commission during its meeting Tuesday. He said in an interview after the vote that it was a political act.

"It carries as much legal significance as the guy selling coffee on the corner," he said.

Commissioner Frank Piergrossi called the vote a "very sad day for the community."

"There's no joy in this room tonight," he said. "The captain of the ship is responsible for his ship."

More than 100 residents attended the meeting, and many denounced the recommendation to fire Gallo, who is an unnamed co-conspirator in the federal indictment accusing him of blocking the police commission's efforts to investigate misconduct. Einhorn denies the claims.

Many say that beyond the issue of alleged abuse against Latinos is a broad divide in East Haven between the Republican mayor and his backers on one side and Democrats who supported his predecessor, whom he defeated in November.

"Tell me this isn't political," resident Angelo Santomassimo told the commissioners.

Resident Paul Carbo told commissioners they should be fired if they tried to dismiss Gallo.

"I think this town should stand behind their policemen," he said.

Fred Brow, chairman of the commission, said Gallo shouldn't be allowed to retire and cash in on a retirement package he estimated at more than $100,000.

"To put this money in the hands of an individual who did not properly run the department in years is just not right," he said.

The commission compiled a lengthy list of accusations against Gallo. It said his "supervisory neglect" was evident in the indictment of the officers, he failed to conduct internal investigations, illegally barred the Board of Police Commissioners from police headquarters, failed to submit state required racial profiling data and failed to investigate complaints.

It was not the first time the commission voted to recommend his ouster. Commissioner James Krebs said commissioners urged the previous mayor, April Capone Almon, to fire him. She instead put the chief on administrative leave in April 2010.

Maturo defeated Almon last November and quickly reinstated Gallo, drawing criticism even from some supporters.
