Best Desktop Search Application?

Best Desktop Search Application? You saved a file somewhere on your system, and all you can remember is a phrase or snippet of text you wrote inside of it. How do you go about finding the file? If you know the filename, it can be easy with your OS's built-in tools, but if you're searching contents, file types, or created/modified dates, it can get tough. Thankfully there are desktop search utilities that help, and this week we want to know which ones you think are the best.

It's been a long time since we last touched on this topic, and some of the ones we loved back then (including Google Desktop Search), are long gone now. Have you found a favorite that you've stuck with over the years, or has the need for these tools diminished since then? Sound off with your nomination in the discussions below.

Hive Five nominations take place in the discussions, where you post your favorite tool for the job. We get hundreds of nominations, so to make your nomination clear, please include it at the top of your post like so: VOTE: BEST DESKTOP SEARCH APPLICATION. Please don't include your vote in a reply to another person. Nominations emailed to us will not be counted. Instead, make your vote and reply separate discussions. After you've made your nomination, let us know what makes it stand out from the competition.

About the Hive Five: The Hive Five feature series asks readers to answer the most frequently asked question we get: "Which tool is the best?" Once a week we'll put out a call for contenders looking for the best solution to a certain problem, then YOU tell us your favorite tools to get the job done. Every weekend, we'll report back with the top five recommendations and give you a chance to vote on which is best. For an example, check out last week's five best a/v receivers.

The Hive Five is based on reader nominations. As with most Hive Five posts, if your favorite was left out, it's not because we hate it?it's because it didn't get the nominations required in the call for contenders post to make the top five. We understand it's a bit of a popularity contest, but if you have a favorite, we want to hear about it. Have a suggestion for the Hive Five? Send us an email at tips+hivefive@lifehacker.com!

Brace yourselves: What to expect in sequestration

President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner (Win McNamee/Getty Images)

The Senate on Thursday voted to reject all proposals for an alternative deficit-reduction plan that would avoid sequestration, a process that will trim $85 billion in across-the-board spending from the federal budget this year.

Barring a sudden and unexpected outbreak of bipartisan cooperation (LOL) over the next 12 hours, most federal departments on Friday will begin the process of shaving about 2.5 percent from their projected budgets as part of the sequestration order. Over the next decade, if the policy remains in effect, the federal government will spend about $1.2 trillion less than projected, although spending will still increase over that time.

There has been a lot of noise coming from Washington about the consequences of the sequestration plan, which was originally voted into law in 2011 to encourage lawmakers to pass a "grand bargain" replacement that would achieve the same amount of deficit reduction.

The White House on Sunday released an alarming state-by-state breakdown of possible consequences if sequestration occurred. Hawaii Democratic Gov. Neil Abercrombie warned that Pearl Harbor would be less secure. California Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters cautioned that "over 170 million jobs" were at risk. (That would mean negative employment, considering there aren't even that many jobs right now in the U.S.) In all likelihood, sequestration will not be nearly as bad as advertised, something even President Barack Obama suggested on Wednesday night.

In seeking an alternative, lawmakers failed to bridge the divide between the Democrats' demand for more tax increases and the Republicans' insistence that the deficit be narrowed by cutting spending alone. On Thursday?one day before the deadline?Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid put a Republican bill and a Democratic bill on the floor to avoid sequestration. Both failed. (Even if the Republican version had passed, Obama had already vowed to veto it anyway. If the Democratic bill passed, the House would likely have rejected it.)

Washington has long known that this day would come. But instead of working in recent weeks to replace the across-the-board-style cuts with smarter methods of achieving some deficit reduction, the parties waged a public relations campaign against each other. Republicans focused on ensuring that Democrats took the blame for proposing the sequestration idea in the first place. Democrats worked to highlight the potential impact the cuts would have on federal services across the country, and accused Republicans of protecting tax loopholes for wealthy Americans at the expense of everyone else.

Regardless of who is really to blame, the deadline is here and sequestration will happen. What does that mean for most Americans? Actually, not much, at least in terms of effects people will immediately see and feel.

Yes, federal agencies will be forced to do more with a bit less. Over the past few months, everyone from Capitol Hill aides, military service members, federal workers and government contractors have been told to prepare for cuts. If you fall into any of those camps, Washington's inaction will likely have an effect on your bottom line. Civilian employees who work with the U.S. military may not secure as many contracts in the year ahead, for instance, and anyone who works under most federal agencies will be forced to prioritize their department's spending.

There are also plans to furlough workdays for some federal employees, so some can prepare for three-day weekends?but in return for less take-home pay. State and local government employees will also face budget hurdles as part of sequestration. State governments will have fewer federal dollars to subsidize local projects. Federal grants will become more competitive, and federal loans could become more scarce.

But here's the good news: Congress can vote at any time to replace the sequester with an alternative. The March 1 deadline merely sets the process into motion, and it will be gradual?perhaps so gradual that most people won't even notice.

As Obama put it this week, sequestration is ?not a cliff, but it is a tumble downward.? There will be plenty of branches along the way for lawmakers to latch onto. The question is, how far will they let the country tumble before they finally grab one?

(AP) ? A shark possibly 14 feet long killed a swimmer near a popular New Zealand beach on Wednesday, then disappeared after police attempting to save the man fired gunshots at the enormous predator.

Muriwai Beach near Auckland was closed after the fatal attack, one of only about a dozen in New Zealand in the past 180 years.

Pio Mose, who was fishing at the beach, told The New Zealand Herald he saw the swimmer struggle against the "huge" shark. He told the man to swim to the rocks, but it was too late.

"All of a sudden there was blood everywhere," Mose said. "... I was shaking, scared, panicked."

Police Inspector Shawn Rutene said in a statement that the swimmer, was about 200 meters (650 feet) offshore when the shark attacked. He said police went out in inflatable surf-lifesaving boats and shot at the shark, which they estimate was 12 to 14 feet long.

"It rolled over and disappeared," Rutene said, without saying whether police are certain that they killed the creature.

Police recovered the body of the swimmer. The Herald reported that he was Adam Strange, a 46-year-old television and short film director, and that his family issued a statement expressing their shock and requesting privacy.

About 200 people had been enjoying the beach during the Southern Hemisphere summer at the time of the attack. Police said Muriwai and other beaches nearby have been closed until further notice.

Police did not say what species of shark was involved in the attack. Clinton Duffy, a shark expert with the Department of Conservation, said New Zealand is a hotspot for great white sharks, and other potentially lethal species also inhabit the waters.

Attacks are rare. Duffy estimated that only 12 to 14 people have been killed by sharks in New Zealand since record-keeping began in the 1830s.

"There are much lower levels of shark attacks here than in Australia," he said. "It's possibly a function of how many people are in the water" in New Zealand's cooler climate.

He said that during the Southern Hemisphere summer, sharks often come in closer to shore to feed and to give birth, although that doesn't necessarily equate to a greater risk of attack.

"Ninety-nine percent of the time they ignore people," he said. "Sometimes, people get bitten."

Around the world, sharks attacked humans 80 times last year, and seven people were killed, according to the University of Florida's International Shark Attack File. The death toll was lower than it was in 2011 but higher than the average of 4.4 from 2001 to 2010.

ResidualReach make Podio the 'Best Business Investment of the ...

26.02.13 Posted in Work by Britt van Slyck

This is a guest blog post from Marni Melrose of ResidualReach LLC, a Podio Preferred Partner based in California, helping implement Podio in small and medium sized businesses. From this series of blog posts from our parters we?re hoping to help you find the right partner?to get the most out of Podio in your company.??

Marni Melrose: ?ResidualReach LLC, is a boutique business consulting firm in La Jolla, CA. Our purpose as is to help small and medium sized businesses evolve, to reach beyond where they are now and leave something residual behind; some sort of long lasting impact on their stakeholders. We do that by architecting efficient business workflows. We have helped more than 250 companies in the last 11 years from many different industries.

?

Prior to becoming a Podio Preferred Partner we were the world leading implementer of a client /server product called Daylite on the Mac OS X platform. We continue to support that product but have fallen head over heals in love with Podio. What attracted us to Podio was that it is so far ahead of the curve with regards to collaboration and platform independence. It has revolutionized the way we ourselves produce the lessons for our online learning academy.

We don?t recommend what we don?t use so we had to be convinced before we ever recommended it to our clients. Podio passed with flying colors. We even made a 36 minute video on why and how we use Podio ourselves. You can see that here,?just click Get Access at the top of the site to watch the full length video.

The challenge and the opportunity with Podio is that you can?t quite put your finger on what it is, because it?s many things to many different people. I equate it to Legos in the cloud. You can build whatever your imagination can conjure up. Want a CRM, a project management solution, a way to get rid of email? Just build it. But there?s the rub. If I give you some Lego blocks and you have no skills building with them, you are going to build something simple that might get the job partially done, but by no means elegantly. However, working with a Podio Preferred Partner is like working with a master builder. You know, those people who build entire mini cities with Legos that have trains and transportation systems and the like?

Recently we worked with Inspireworks in Australia. (We do most of our work remotely with clients all over the world using another product from Citrix, GoToMeeting.)

Inspireworks is a video production company that helps clients connect with their audiences in more meaningful ways. Specializing in corporate communications across the utilities, construction and technology sectors, Inspireworks helps audiences understand accept and act upon their message.

They were feeling restricted by their ?out-of-the-box? software and wanted to do the following:

Give my producer the tools she needs to manage projects and client deliverables and expectations. To give my Producer the tools to communicate effectively with external sub-contractors so that everyone is on the same page regarding projects. (Sub-contractors do not need to see our entire client base but need appointments, tasks, and project objectives).

Ability for the same producer to track and manage expenses on a producer. To give their managing director and finance person the ability to report on budget versus actual for each project. For employees to track time on projects. To improve workforce planning and resource allocation for upcoming Video Projects. (People and equipment)

To be able to record information on-set into the system. For example when a client says to you on set ?can you add a title in at that part.?

To simplify our workflow and ensure that clients get the same great service everytime. For producers to use template correspondence. Improve our workflow documentation within an Intranet system. To improve our sales follow up system. To go paperless!

So we gave it to them, slightly under budget and on time. The client was so happy in his review on our website he said, ?Professional, reliable and simply brilliant! ?Best investment that we made on our business this year??He also told me that he considers his new system a competitive advantage. ?No one will work as closely with their clients as we do. It?s a game changer!? he said.

Those results are why we do what we do. It?s the passion that drives us to revolutionize a business and the way they work. Podio sets us free to be the creative geniuses that we love to be.

To give you an idea of how this was done, here?s a generalization of the workspaces and apps we built for them in Podio to achieve their objectives:

Parties may struggle to form government in Italy

Democratic Party leader Pierluigi Bersani leaves after a press conference in Rome, Tuesday Feb. 26, 2013. Democratic Party leader Pierluigi Bersani leaves after a press conference in Rome, Tuesday Feb. 26, 2013. (AP) ? A center-left group of parties appears to have the best shot at forming a coalition government in Italy after an inconclusive national election, but the challenge is steep and comes amid public anger over austerity measures.

If Italian parties fail to form a governing coalition, new elections would be required, causing more uncertainty and a leadership vacuum, and that possibility has rattled financial markets across Europe.

Pier Luigi Bersani and his center-left allies appeared on Tuesday to have won a narrow victory in the lower house of parliament, while the Senate looks split with no party in control. Silvio Berlusconi, the former Italian premier whose center-right coalition did better than expected, is a key player since his coalition is now the second-biggest bloc in the upper chamber.

Comic-turned-political leader Beppe Grillo, whose 5 Star Movement capitalized on a wave of voter disgust with the ruling political class, had a surprisingly strong showing. His bloc of seats in Parliament could prove crucial in making any coalition government viable.

The two-day election on Sunday and Monday also was a clear rejection of the previous technocratic government led by Mario Monti. That government enacted wide-ranging reforms to the budget and the economy. Though its borrowing rates have fallen in financial markets, the cost to Italians has been high, with Italy mired in recession and unemployment on the rise.

Berlusconi has already ruled out an alliance with Monti, his predecessor, whom he blamed for driving Italy deeper into recession.

On Tuesday, a few seats in Parliament based on Italians' voting abroad still remained to be decided, but their numbers won't ease the gridlock. European leaders pleaded with politicians in Italy to quickly form a government to continue to enact reforms to lower Italy's critically high debt and spare Europe another spike in its four-year financial crisis.

Bersani said he was not opening talks with any potential partners until he submits his program to Italy's president, who taps a candidate to form a government.

Stinging from a loss of some 4 million votes compared to the last election in 2008, Bersani hasn't yet identified who he could try to form alliances with. But top officials in his Democratic Left (PD) party were quick to rule out any deal with Berlusconi.

"As far as I go, absolutely not," Stefano Fassina, a PD official, said of a possible Bersani-Berlusconi alliance.

Italy's FTSE MIB index closed trading Tuesday 4.89 percent lower at 15,731, having earlier been nearly 5 percent down. Some of its banking stocks were briefly suspended after precipitous falls at the bell.

Whether Tuesday's negative market reaction extends further into the week may hinge on how quickly a solution is reached in Italy.

Berlusconi insisted that a government can be formed and called on Italians to ignore the "crazy" markets.

"Markets go their own way. They are independent and also a little crazy," Berlusconi said, adding that a government can be cobbled together, if rival politicians are willing to "make some sacrifices."

Grillo said his forces would seek to thwart any Bersani-Berlusconi deal. Raising the specter of early elections, he predicted any such coalition will "last seven, eight months. The economy won't let them escape."

Bersani himself later made subtle overture toward Grillo's forces, conceding that the center-left campaign had not gone deep enough for change. "We finished first, without winning," he conceded.

Italy is hugely important for the future of the euro, and its apparent stability over the past six months has been one of the reasons that concerns over the currency have eased. Of the 17 European Union countries that use the euro, Italy has the second-highest debt burden as a proportion of its gross domestic product, at 127 percent.

Only Greece's is higher. Italy has to spend around ?80 billion a year just to service its debt.

The worry across financial markets is that Italy's appetite for reform may wane and its debt situation may deteriorate.

Though Italy's annual borrowing ? its budget deficit ? is relatively small compared with other euro countries at 3 percent of its annual gross domestic product, its overall debt stands at a colossal ?2 trillion.

Scientists develop a whole new way of harvesting energy from the sun

Monday, February 25, 2013

A new method of harvesting the Sun's energy is emerging, thanks to scientists at UC Santa Barbara's Departments of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, and Materials. Though still in its infancy, the research promises to convert sunlight into energy using a process based on metals that are more robust than many of the semiconductors used in conventional methods. The researchers' findings are published in the latest issue of the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

"It is the first radically new and potentially workable alternative to semiconductor-based solar conversion devices to be developed in the past 70 years or so," said Martin Moskovits, professor of chemistry at UCSB.

In conventional photoprocesses, a technology developed and used over the last century, sunlight hits the surface of semiconductor material, one side of which is electron-rich, while the other side is not. The photon, or light particle, excites the electrons, causing them to leave their postions, and create positively-charged "holes." The result is a current of charged particles that can be captured and delivered for various uses, including powering lightbulbs, charging batteries, or facilitating chemical reactions.

"For example, the electrons might cause hydrogen ions in water to be converted into hydrogen, a fuel, while the holes produce oxygen," said Moskovits.

In the technology developed by Moskovits and his team, it is not semiconductor materials that provide the electrons and venue for the conversion of solar energy, but nanostructured metals ? a "forest" of gold nanorods, to be specific.

For this experiment, gold nanorods were capped with a layer of crystalline titanium dioxide decorated with platinum nanoparticles, and set in water. A cobalt-based oxidation catalyst was deposited on the lower portion of the array.

"When nanostructures, such as nanorods, of certain metals are exposed to visible light, the conduction electrons of the metal can be caused to oscillate collectively, absorbing a great deal of the light," said Moskovits. "This excitation is called a surface plasmon."

As the "hot" electrons in these plasmonic waves are excited by light particles, some travel up the nanorod, through a filter layer of crystalline titanium dioxide, and are captured by platinum particles. This causes the reaction that splits hydrogen ions from the bond that forms water. Meanwhile, the holes left behind by the excited electrons head toward the cobalt-based catalyst on the lower part of the rod to form oxygen.

According to the study, hydrogen production was clearly observable after about two hours. Additionally, the nanorods were not subject to the photocorrosion that often causes traditional semiconductor material to fail in minutes.

"The device operated with no hint of failure for many weeks," Moskovits said.

The plasmonic method of splitting water is currently less efficient and more costly than conventional photoprocesses, but if the last century of photovoltaic technology has shown anything, it is that continued research will improve on the cost and efficiency of this new method ? and likely in far less time than it took for the semiconductor-based technology, said Moskovits.

"Despite the recentness of the discovery, we have already attained 'respectable' efficiencies. More importantly, we can imagine achievable strategies for improving the efficiencies radically," he said.

Research in this study was also performed by postdoctoral researchers Syed Mubeen and Joun Lee; grad student Nirala Singh; materials engineer Stephan Kraemer; and chemistry professor Galen Stucky.

Libertas Academica: HER2 Overexpression in Colorectal Cancer

Published today in Clinical Medicine Insights: Oncology is a new review by Erik J Blok, Peter JK Kuppen, Jeroen EM van Leeuwen and Cornelis FM Sier.? Read more about this paper below:

Title

Cytoplasmic Overexpression of HER2: a Key Factor in Colorectal Cancer

Abstract

Trastuzumab, a humanized mouse monoclonal antibody directed against HER2 (Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2), is currently a keystone in the treatment of breast cancer. Meanwhile, trastuzumab has been validated for use in other types of cancer too. But the data on HER2 expression in colorectal cancer are ambiguous, with reported overexpression of HER2 varying between zero and 84%. In this review these studies are evaluated and compared. It shows that many factors influence the determination of HER2-expression, especially of the intracellular fraction of HER2. It is concluded that although membranous overexpression of HER2 is low in colorectal cancer with only 5% of all patients being positive, a significant proportion of the patients (30%) shows cytoplasmic HER2 overexpression. The clinical impact of enhanced intracellular HER2 is not known, because the nature and origin have not completely been revealed yet. Enlightening this process could be a stepping stone towards targeting of intracellular HER2 as a treatment option.

Host MacFarlane's humor gets mixed reception

    Kevin Winter / Getty Images

    By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

Seth MacFarlane is best known as the creator of the often risque "Family Guy" series, not generally the kind of biography touted by an Oscar host. With a reported billion people watching worldwide, some Oscar fans wondered what MacFarlane would pull out of his bag of tricks Sunday night.

Everything, it turned out, and anything -- including a series of initial jokes that elicited as many gasps and groans as laughs. Sure, he made a solid base hit with his first words: "And the quest to make Tommy Lee Jones laugh begins now" (cut to the man whose poker face became a meme during the Golden Globes chuckling gently). But a reference to Chris Brown and Rihanna's relationship problems (joking that they considered bloody and violent "Django Unchained" "a date movie") crossed a line for some, as did his comparing the multiple uses of the n-word in "Django" to "Mel Gibson's voice mails."

Fortuntately, Capt. Kirk arrived to try and save the night. An enormous screen descended from the top of the stage featuring William Shatner in full "Star Trek" regalia, pointing out to MacFarlane that his jokes were "tasteless" and "inappropriate."

Shatner/Kirk showed the first of several "future clips" and headlines indicating that MacFarlane had ruined the telecast: First, a performance of "We Saw Your Boobs," a song that named a number of actresses who went half-dressed in various films. (Cut to pre-filmed clips of actresses giving him dirty looks for pointing out that at some point, billions of movie fans out there saw, well, their boobs.)

And no surprise, a boob singing songs about boobs won over the crowd, temporarily. It didn't necessarily win over the viewing audience, however, and spawned the first of what would be an evening's worth of blog posts and Tweets questioning whether MacFarlane was sexist. Buzzfeed made a list, ?The Atlantic Wire said the monologue was "maybe racist and sexist," and of course the Twitterverse weighed in.?

But all of that was happening off-camera, and back on stage MacFarlane knew he had to "fix" the future. So he launched into "The Way You Look Tonight" as Channing Tatum and Charlize Theron danced in classic Fred-and-Ginger style behind him, a move that didn't fix everything. Shatner next had to explain why MacFarlane's sock-puppet reenactment of "Flight," in which he wore a brown sock to represent Denzel Washington, bombed at the "future" Oscars.

"You're a white guy in 2013," said Shatner to MacFarlane. "You can't wear black hand."

And that's when the mood of the crowd sank again. The truth: White guys doing racial humor, no matter how gentle, still makes everyone uncomfortable. So MacFarlane led into another older tune -- MacFarlane, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Daniel Radcliffe hoofing it to "High Hopes," a song popularized in 1959.

It still wasn't quite enough, said Shatner, to make MacFarlane an acceptable host -- and another future clip featured him dressed as Sally Field's character "The Flying Nun," chatting up Field backstage, ultimately making out with her and driving off in a "Smokey and the Bandit"-style Trans Am. "I went home with Sally Field, that's awesome!" he said.

But without Field there to get her Oscar, Shatner told him, Amy Adams "ran up and grabbed it ... they tried to take it from her and she bit a guy." So, the final attempt: MacFarlane had to give the crowds a showstopper of an opener. One more big song and dance number: "Beauty and the Beast's" peppy "Be Our Guest." And that seemed to do it -- Shatner's screen vanished, and projected across the back of the stage, the new headline: "Best Oscars ever, says everyone except Entertainment Weekly."

Cut to the new Tommy Lee Jones of the evening, the unsmiling nominee Joaquin Phoenix. So maybe Entertainment Weekly is in good company.?

Governors: Automatic cuts could undermine economy

Budget stalemate in Washington worries Democratic and Republican governors. Automatic spending cuts March 1 cut stall recent economic gains, they warn.?

By Ken Thomas and Steve Peoples,?Associated Press / February 24, 2013

National Governors Association Vice Chairman Gov. Mary Fallin of Oklahoma, left, with Chairman Gov. Jack Markell of Delaware, speaks during a news conference at the NGA Winter Meeting in Washington, Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013. U.S. governors urged Washington to avoid spending cuts that would affect states' defense and federal agencies and expressed concerns that they would hamper their economic recovery.

Washington's protracted budget stalemate could seriously undermine the economy and stall gains made since the recession, exasperated governors said Saturday as they tried to gauge the fallout from impending federal spending cuts.

At the annual National Governors Association meeting, both Democrat and Republican chief executives expressed pessimism that both sides could find a way to avoid the massive, automatic spending cuts set to begin March 1, pointing to the impasse as another crisis between the White House and Congress that hampers their ability to construct state spending plans and spooks local businesses from hiring.

Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie, a former congressman, noted that the cuts ? known in Washington-speak as "the?sequester" ? could lead to 19,000 workers laid off at Pearl Harbor, site of the surprise attack in 1941 that launched the United States into World War II. Today, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam supports Air Force and Navy missions.

"That will undermine our capacity for readiness at Pearl Harbor. If that doesn't symbolize for the nation ... what happens when we fail to meet our responsibilities congressionally, I don't know what does," Abercrombie said.

The budget fight came as many states say they are on the cusp of an economic comeback from the financial upheaval in 2008 and 2009. States expect their general fund revenues this year to surpass the amounts collected before the Great Recession kicked in. An estimated $693 billion in revenues is expected for the 2013 budget year, nearly a 4 percent increase over the previous year.

"It's a damn shame," said Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, a Democrat. "We've actually had the fastest rate of jobs recovery of any state in our region. And this really threatens to hurt a lot of families in our state and kind of flat line our job growth for the next several months."

At their weekend meetings, governors were focusing on ways to boost job development and grow their state economies, measures to restrict gun violence and implement the new health care law approved during Obama's first term.

Some Republican governors have blocked the use of Medicaid to expand health insurance coverage for millions of uninsured while others have joined Democrats in a wholesale expansion as the law allows. The Medicaid expansion aims to cover about half of the 30 million uninsured people expected to eventually gain coverage under the health care overhaul.

Yet for many governors, the budget-cut fight remains front-and-center and fuels a pervasive sense of frustration with Washington.

"My feeling is I can't help what's going on in Washington," Gov. Terry Branstad, R-Iowa, said in an interview Saturday. "I can't help the fact that there's no leadership here, and it's all politics as usual and gridlock. But I can do something about the way we do things in the state of Iowa."

Indeed, right now no issue carries the same level of urgency as the budget impasse.

Congressional leaders have indicated a willingness to let the cuts take effect and stay in place for weeks, if not much longer.

The cuts would trim $85 billion in domestic and defense spending, leading to furloughs for hundreds of thousands of workers at the Transportation Department, Defense Department and elsewhere.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has said the cuts would harm the readiness of U.S. fighting forces.

The looming cuts were never supposed to happen. They were intended to be a draconian fallback intended to ensure a special deficit reduction committee would come up with $1 trillion or more in savings from benefit programs. It didn't.

"We should go back and remember that sequestration was originally designed by both the administration and Congress as something so odious, so repellent, that it would force both sides to a compromise. There can't be any question, this is something that nobody wants," said Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, a Democrat.

Obama has stepped up efforts to tell the public about the cuts' negative impact and pressure Republicans who oppose his approach of reducing deficits through a combination of targeted savings and tax increases. House Republicans have said reduced spending needs to be the focus and have rejected the president's fresh demand to include higher taxes as part of a compromise.

Governors said they are asking the Obama administration for more flexibility to deal with some of the potential cuts.

"We're just saying that as you identify federal cuts and savings, allow the states to be able to realize those savings, too," said Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin, a Republican and the association's vice chairwoman.

RECOMMENDED:?Sequester 101: What happens if $85 billion in cuts hit on March 1

Polls and pundits aren?t everything, of course. Most Americans this weekend likely are far more interested in Sunday night?s Oscar extravaganza.

And most would likely agree with Atlantic associate editor Matthew O'Brien when he writes ? with as much truth as irony ? on the magazine?s web site: ?There is nothing more tedious in the world today than the sequester. The word itself sounds like a prescription sleeping aid.? There is, after all the gnashing of teeth over the ?fiscal cliff? last month, a bit of ?The Boy Who Cried Wolf? here for most people.

Still, if the sequester kicks in, thousands of federal workers could be furloughed, some national park programs could be curtailed, and things could be ?very painful for the flying public,??as Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood warned Friday.

The sequester no doubt will dominate the Sunday morning TV news shows as Republicans and Democrats angle for rhetorical advantage over the sequester?s $85 billion in budget cuts this fiscal year, split evenly between defense and non-defense programs.

At the moment, that advantage seems to be with President Obama and the White House. Just to flesh out those headlines cited above?.

Bloomberg News put it starkly this week: ?President?Barack Obama?enters the latest budget showdown with Congress with his highest job-approval rating in three years and public support for his economic message, while his Republican opponents? popularity stands at a record low.?

Specifically, 55 percent of those polled by Bloomberg last week approve of Obama?s performance in office, his strongest level of support since September 2009. But only 35 percent have a favorable view of the?Republican Party, the lowest rating over the same period. The GOP?s brand slipped six percentage points in the last six months, the poll shows.

Asked who is more to blame for ?what?s gone wrong? in?Washington, those surveyed picked Republicans over Obama 43-34 percent.

Similarly, Gallup finds public approval of Congress ? just 15 percent ? is ?at the low end of the historical spectrum.? It?s not great news for either party, but Democrats have a slight edge in public approval ? 19 percent to 12 percent for the GOP.

Facebook's main app for iOS adds free voice calls inside North America

    Facebook calling

Facebook has been spreading voice messaging throughout its mobile apps for awhile, but it's clear the Palo Alto crew is no longer happy leaving interaction to canned speeches. Following a quiet rollout of live voice calls to Facebook Messenger earlier in the year, a version 5.5 update to Facebook's core iOS app is giving social networkers a similar chance to talk to each other for free. The only stipulations are that users have the bandwidth to burn and live in either the US or Canada. Otherwise, the interface and functionality are dead ringers for the Messenger equivalents we tried in January. There's still no word on when full voice calls will reach Android or other platforms, although they typically get feature parity before too long.

Sequester will hit where it hurts: air travel

Ray LaHood speaks to reporters Friday. (AP Video)President Barack Obama's administration on Friday brought out Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood to strike fear in the American public over the sequester right where it hurts: their impatience with air travel.

Ahead of the sequester?across-the-board spending cuts set to take effect March 1 in the absence of a budget deal?the Federal Aviation Administration is planning to reduce expenditures by $600 million, the FAA and Department of Transportation announced on Friday.

LaHood addressed the press at Friday's White House briefing to detail just how badly the department believes that cut would disrupt Americans' travel plans.

"Travelers should expect delays. Flights to major cities like New York, Chicago, San Francisco and others could experience delays up to 90 minutes during peak hours, because we have fewer controllers on staff. Delays in these major airports will ripple across the country. ... Once airlines see the potential impact of these furloughs, we expect that they will change their schedules and cancel flights," LaHood said.

The Department of Transportation announced on Friday that in an effort to maintain safety standards while making necessary cuts under the sequester, 47,000 FAA employees would be furloughed one day per pay period, select midnight air traffic controller shifts would be eliminated, 100 air traffic towers would be closed, and preventative maintenance and equipment provisioning would be reduced beginning in April. The announcement was made by LaHood and Michael Huerta, administrator of the FAA, in a letter sent on Friday to unions and government entities.

Reporters at Friday's briefing questioned why money couldn't be cut from other parts of the department's budget and why the secretary was announcing such severe changes so close to the sequester deadline.

"Are you just basically throwing out whatever sounds like the most severe consequence in order to ratchet up pressure?" one reporter asked.

LaHood scoffed at that suggestion. "The idea that we're just doing this to create some kind of horrific scare tactic is nonsense," he said.

But LaHood, a Republican former Illinois congressman, conceded that political machinations are very much a part of his role in current negotiations, confirming that he had spoken with about "a half-dozen" Republicans and their staffers about the sequester. "They're hoping that maybe I can influence some of the people in my own party," he said.

He was also aggressive in his description of what politicians might face should the department make good on its plans: "Your phones are going to start ringing off the hook when these people are delayed at airports and when their flights are delayed or their flights are canceled or their air tower is closed."

Among the air towers the government marked on Friday for potential closure was the Southern Wisconsin Regional tower in Janesville, Wis., which is located in House Budget Commitee chairman Paul Ryan's district.

Ryan's office did not immediately return Yahoo News' request for comment.

LaHood called on Republicans to "step up" and offer solutions on how to avoid the sequester. Republicans passed legislation last year in the House to buy down the sequester, and Democrats in the current Congress have introduced bills to buy down the sequester.

AdvSecret.com Stay Ahead Of The Game With These Internet ...

    By Robert Strong

Just about any business can really thrive if it is properly marketed. If you follow the tips below you will be able to market your business in a way that is fruitful. Knowing the right way to handle internet marketing is the key to a successful business when working online.

Change your content or headlines to find out what attracts more people. Most visitors might not be attracted by something that sound too good to be true, even if you thought this headline presented your product under a better light. Find out what works best and develop your strategies around this.

You should be using some sort of analytic tracking. If you are not sure where your customers are coming from, you won?t be targeting the right audience in future marketing pushes. Use of this kind of tracking will give you much needed geographical information and usage patterns while customers are on your site.

Distraction is the worst enemy of a good internet marketing site. If you are going to get your customer?s attention, you are going to have to do it very fast. Your descriptions and other website content have to be incredibly focused, appealing and concise. If you do this you will capture your audiences attention.

Keep track of unused ideas for your web site and revisit them periodically to see if they might be more workable. Just because something didn?t seem like a good idea six months or a year ago, doesn?t mean that it still won?t work. Things are always changing, and you need to keep up with them.

While using Twitter during an internet marketing campaign, do not use your company logo or a gimmicky avatar. Stay away from cartoon avatars as well. Try changing the avatar to a picture of a human being, that human can be yourself or someone else in your company. This may increase your chances of getting more followers.

Make sure to implement search engine optimization on whatever platform you are using to get the most out of your internet marketing experience. Remember that it will take your blog posts longer to get indexed if you aren?t getting organic traffic from your optimized website, so it?s something you should try to do early on in the process.

Communicate with your fans as often as possible through your site and different media outlets, such as MySpace and Facebook. Ask them exactly what they would like for you to do better and the products that they enjoy. This feedback could be used to innovate your product and is a useful tool for customer satisfaction.

Are your bookshelves groaning for relief? You can sell the books you no longer need on the internet. Choose two marketplaces: sell your cheaper books on the one with a lower commission, your more expensive books on the marketplace with a higher commission?but which has more customers and quicker turnover.

Ask others what they?re doing. Sometimes the competition isn?t direct competition. Ask anyone who is marketing on the internet how business is, what kinds of methods are working for them and what isn?t working. Many times they will share information because they realize that one day they?ll have a question too.

You should hire a professional to help you properly market your business. There are people who are highly trained in marketing. They will know every trick of the trade and be able to direct you toward the steps that you should take to generate the most traffic that you possibly can.

Don?t expect to see results immediately. It can take some time for results to start appearing when you try a new internet marketing method, so be patient and focus on other things. This way, you won?t stress out whether it will work out or not; if you do see results quickly, it will be a pleasant surprise.

If you properly market your Internet business you should be able to see outstanding traffic and a boom in your profit margin. Using the tips that have been provided is a great way for you to be sure that you are marketing your business in the best possible way that you can.

Best Buy offers two-week, $100 discount on all Windows 8 touchscreen PCs

Microsoft's Tami Reller told us that demand for touchscreen Windows 8 computers was outstripping supply, but it seems that Best Buy still isn't selling quite as many as it would like. Today, the big box retailer announced that it will offer a $100 discount on all Windows 8 touchscreen PCs starting Sunday, in a two-week promotion ending March 7th. What's more, The Wall Street Journal reports that Best Buy itself will be footing part of the bill, joining Intel, Microsoft, and PC manufacturers in eating the cost of the discount.

The discount won't apply to the Microsoft Surface or other Windows tablets, according to the Journal.

    Best Buy subsidizes touchscreens

Generally, a touchscreen can add between $50 and $200 to the cost of a Windows 8 computer, and touchscreen-equipped models often also have premium parts, so these discounts would largely apply to more expensive PCs anyhow. In case you're interested in picking one up, we recently reviewed the best all-in-one touchscreen PCs, and gave several recent Windows 8 touchscreen laptops reasonably high marks.

While Best Buy hasn't been doing too well as of late, closing stores and cutting jobs, it recently became friendlier to comparison shoppers, permanently offering to match 19 major online retailers' prices on any identical item in its physical stores.

Facebook bug prevents users from entering birth year before 1910

And now, a human interest story. Meet Marguerite Joseph. She's 104 years old and quite proud of her age. Not only is she old, she is an avid user of Facebook. Due to her age, she was in the perfect position to discover a bug within the website that prevents her from putting her real birth year.

    ?

    ?

She's been in a little bit of a battle with Facebook to get the bug ironed out, but she hasn't been able to. Now that she's getting publicity about the problem, Facebook has issued a statement saying they've discovered a bug that prevents users from entering a birth year before 1910:

    ?

"We've recently discovered an issue whereby some Facebook users may be unable to enter a birthday before 1910. We are working on a fix for this and we apologize for the inconvenience."

    ?

According to Joseph, the website won't even let her enter 1918 as her birth year. Every time she tries to enter her true birth date, Facebook pitches out an error message and changes the year to 1928.

    ?

While most people won't be affected by the bug, it certainly shows how Facebook wasn't designed with users of this age in mind. It also shows how times are changing and Facebook has become a staple in people's lives across the spectrum of age.
