Teacher Jobs: Why Teaching Over Other Careers

Many young individuals have opted for careers in today's more popular fields. For one, there has been an increase in demand for some fields while other industries cannot provide the same amount of jobs as they previously did. Also, most people are prone to stereotype jobs, opting for a career in another field because of their misconceptions about other professions-like teacher jobs.

Perhaps, because of their previous experience or because of the mainstream media's portrayal, teachers are often seen as slightly boring individuals who are tasked with managing an unruly group of kids on a daily basis. Others see them as exacting taskmasters ready to dole out punishment for the smallest infractions. Still, some people see teachers as grossly underpaid workers.

Teaching Agency of the Department of Education would beg otherwise regarding these preconceived notions. In one of the agency's studies, many of the teachers they surveyed reported that they find enjoyment and fulfillment in their careers as compared to their counterparts in the fields of marketing, information technology and accountancy. In the same study, teachers were reported to average ten smiles, three laughs, five instances of good banter, and they praised another individual at an average of nine times while they engage someone in an in-depth discussion about seven times during their workday.

In terms of financial rewards, remuneration for mentors is competitive. Qualified teachers are paid according to pay scales. These pay scales are regularly updated by the government every September. Depending on a person's performance, it is possible for a teacher to move up one pay scale annually. Aside from the basic salary, teachers may also receive teaching and learning responsibility (TLR) payments as well as teachers' pension. They are also eligible for joint home ownership schemes.

Then there's the work schedule. Work is mainly done in the morning and in the afternoon. If you have children of your own, this means that more or less, your own schedule matches that of your children. This means lower child care cost. Also, teachers work for about 195 days a year, taking breaks when school's out or during holidays when there are no classes.

Of course, one cannot put a price on the opportunity to work with kids and to be able to help them acquire values and help shape the future of another generation. There is a certain sense of nobility and a unique form of satisfaction derived in committing oneself to this kind of service.
