- J. Walter Tejada kicks off 2013 Moving Forward Together initiative
- Community invited to join coalition
- Grant funding supports projects to reduce childhood obesity
ARLINGTON, Va. ?? ?Arlington County Board Chairman J. Walter Tejada today kicked off his Moving Forward Together Campaign with a community meeting to discuss specific multi-year projects aimed at reducing chronic disease in Arlington?s youth.
?Moving Forward Together is a broad effort to improve the health of all community members, beginning with our young children,? Tejada said at the kick-off event at Fairlington Community Center. ?We invite you to join us as we work with our FitArlington partners on ways to bring healthier eating, physical activity, and fun to our community, with special attention to preventing childhood obesity. We welcome new partners to join the Arlington Healthy Community Action coalition. Together we can ensure the continuity of efforts, food sustainability, and many other actions that help reduce childhood obesity.?
Moving Forward Together
Arlington County will work with volunteer coalition and community members to:
- Provide healthy? foods and movement initiatives for pre-schoolers
- Get kids moving during recess and after-school programs
- Establish new healthy vending options
- Train licensed childcare providers on nutrition and physical activity
- Establish new community gardens
- Provide the opportunity to adopt-a-site as a Master Food Volunteer
County wins Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth grant
To support this effort, Arlington County received a Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth (VFHY) grant. The grant will support the County?s effort to prevent childhood obesity by strengthening the existing ???Action Communities for Health, Innovation and EnVironmental ChangE? (ACHIEVE) community coalition, and by addressing both community food access and physical activity for preschool and school-age children.? Additional funding is available from a block grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to the State of Virginia?s Obesity Prevention through Health Communities Projects is available to support an increase in the frequency, duration, and intensity of physical activity for youth in Arlington afterschool and camp programs.
